Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has announced that it will give 5 per cent of its shares to a new fund called the Anthropic Public Benefit Fund. The fund will support donations to non-profit groups and make direct payments to certain groups of people.
The fund will build on Anthropic's existing commitment of $200 million to study how AI affects the job market. It aims to support stronger social measures as artificial intelligence develops quickly.
Chief Executive Dario Amodei and five other company founders have promised to donate 80 per cent of their wealth. An employee share-matching plan will also let workers pledge some of their shares alongside the company's contributions.
In total, about 20 per cent of Anthropic's shares will now be used to benefit the public. The company may set aside even more shares if it reaches certain company valuation targets.
These major promises to give money and shares to good causes come as Anthropic prepares for a possible stock market launch, which could happen as early as November.
