Fans of a girl group created by artificial intelligence (AI) were shocked when one of its members announced that she was pregnant and would leave the group. Mity, a member of the computer-created band BabyQueen, explained her strange decision to leave on social media. She told fans she felt "guilty" because of the "personal circumstances" behind her decision. She also said she wanted "to apologise" to anyone who felt "worried and disappointed".
In a post on the Chinese social media site Weibo, Mity wrote: "It is with a very heavy heart that I share this news with you. I recently found out that I am pregnant."
"After a long time thinking about it and having detailed talks with the company and the other members, I have decided to leave the group for a while so I can focus on my pregnancy and recovery."
The other four members are named Hyeina, Kim Nawon, Youngxi and Jocee.
The AI singer, whose hit songs include Bang Bang and Next Level, said that leaving the group was "not an easy decision". But she said she needed to "put my health and this new life first".
The news left fans stunned. One person wrote on social media that they had started following the AI group because they wanted to avoid the sadness of seeing band members leave.
She wrote: "Wait I can't understand! Are these words even real? So now even AI can take maternity leave and have scandals."
Mity did not say who the father was.
Other people found the situation funny, as the AI singer appeared to act on her own and announce her pregnancy. Many joked about who the father might be, with some suggesting that another AI chatbot could be responsible.
One person asked: "Who's the father? Chat GPT?" Another joked: "Is the server the baby's dad?"
Other users guessed what might happen when the fictional baby was due to arrive. One person joked that Mity might "give birth to a robot".
All the members of the band were created using AI.
Although BabyQueen has not become popular in the Western market, the AI girl group is well known in China. The post announcing Mity's departure had been viewed about 80 million times.
All five singers in the group are created entirely by AI. The music they release and their social media posts are also made using AI. The group is believed to have been created by a group of female students in China. Their love of Korean pop music inspired them to make their own band.
In a Weibo post after the recent pregnancy story, one of the group's creators called Mity's actions "inappropriate". However, the creator also admitted that her departure was not entirely a bad thing, because managing all five members of the group had "become difficult".
