OpenAI prepares GPT-6.1 Terra for the upcoming release
OpenAI may be bringing back its Terra model tier. GPT-6.1 Terra has appeared in a Microsoft pull request, at the same time that The Information reported that a new Terra model is on the way.
OpenAI's Terra model line may soon return. According to a post by Lumina, GPT-6.1 Terra appeared in 18 evaluation settings in a Microsoft pull request. These settings were changed from GPT-5.6 Terra to GPT-6.1 Terra. Such changes usually happen when a team is getting ready to test a model, rather than months before a launch. This suggests the new model may arrive soon.

This also matches a new report from The Information (which requires a paid subscription to read). In a post about the report, Stephanie Palazzolo said this month should be "a busy one for new model releases," pointing to a new Anthropic model, Google's Gemini 4 Carbon, and "a possible new Terra model from OpenAI."
Expect this month to be a busy one for new model releases. We have details on a new Anthropic model, Google's Gemini 4 Carbon, and a possible new Terra model from OpenAI.https://t.co/uC6Spf0tcR

The report says the new Terra is expected to perform better than GPT-6.1 Sol while costing less. OpenAI is reportedly keen to compete with Anthropic on price. If this is true, it would be interesting because Sol already costs $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens.
However, Stephanie Palazzolo later shared another post to explain that some of the new models might not launch until November. So, not all the expected releases will necessarily arrive this month.
Anthropic is also preparing a model that reportedly does a better job of understanding what users really want, even when they do not clearly explain it. It is still unclear whether this model will be called Fable or Opus. However, it fits with the signs of Claude Fable 5.5 that we have been following.
ANTHROPIC 🔥: According to The Information, Anthropic will release a new model this month, along with Gemini 4 Carbon and a new Terra model from OpenAI.

While new models are on the way, OpenAI has also been improving its current products. ChatGPT Slides now supports real-time collaborative editing, so teams, Dots, and ChatGPT can work on the same presentation together.
OpenAI may also be testing GPT-Image-3, based on reports about its Aurora models. The company clearly has a lot in progress. However, a cheaper Terra model will not satisfy everyone who is waiting for a new model at the Astra level. Still, if Terra really performs better than Sol at a lower price, many developers will be interested.
