Anthropic and Nscale in talks for second $45bn deal - report
Companies previously signed a $45 billion agreement for computing capacity in August 2026.
Anthropic is reportedly in talks to rent more computing capacity at Nscale's Monarch data center campus.
According to Bloomberg, which cited a person familiar with the matter, the deal could be worth up to $45 billion. This would be the second deal of this size between the AI company and the cloud computing provider Nscale.
According to the source, the deal would give Anthropic space in a second data center at Nscale's campus, which is being built in West Virginia. The agreement would cover 460MW of computing capacity and include Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips.
Anthropic reportedly also has the first chance to agree to a deal for the campus's third building before it is offered to others.
DCD has asked both Anthropic and Nscale for comment.
Anthropic and Nscale first signed a contract in August 2026 for 460MW of computing capacity at the Monarch campus.
The Monarch campus in West Virginia is Nscale's largest project. The company bought the 2,250-acre site in March 2026. The site could eventually support up to 8GW of computing capacity. The first stage is planned to provide 2GW and is expected to begin operating in the first half of 2028. Power will come from Caterpillar's fast-start natural gas generators, known as the Caterpillar G3500 series.
Microsoft has also agreed to use 1.35GW of capacity at the site. Nscale will build a large system of graphics processing units (GPUs) there, using Nvidia Vera Rubin NVL72 GPUs.
News of another possible large deal comes at a good time for Nscale. Earlier this week, Microsoft withdrew from one of its agreements to use computing capacity from Nscale. The decision was due to problems with the queue for connections to the UK's electricity grid.
Both Anthropic and Nscale are moving closer to planned initial public offerings (IPOs), when their shares could first be sold to the public. Nscale published its IPO prospectus in September. It said that Nscale had five data centers in operation, offering a total of 55MW of capacity, and 12 more at different stages of development. Anthropic filed its IPO paperwork confidentially in June 2026.
