Nscale in Talks for Second $45 Billion Anthropic Deal
Nscale, a London-based company that builds data centers for artificial intelligence (AI) and is backed by Nvidia NVDA, is in talks to sell computing power to Anthropic in a deal that could be worth about $45 billion. Reuters reported this, citing a person familiar with the matter. The deal would cover a second facility at Nscale's Monarch data center campus in West Virginia.
This would add to a $45 billion deal Anthropic agreed to in August to rent computing power at the same campus. The second Monarch building would provide 460 megawatts of power using Nvidia's Vera Rubin chips. The person said Anthropic also has the right to be the first to accept or reject an offer for a planned third building.
The talks are taking place as Nscale's planned initial public offering (IPO), when a company first sells shares to the public, faces problems. Microsoft (MSFT) withdrew from a deal to become the main customer for a major Nscale data center after delays in connecting it to the power supply pushed the expected start of power delivery into the 2030s. Investors have also questioned Nscale's planned company value of about $30 billion, Bloomberg reported on Sunday. Nscale's IPO prospectus lists Microsoft and Anthropic as its expected main customers.
In two and a half years, Nscale has increased the total value of its contracted deals from $100 million to more than $103 billion. It competes with Nebius Group (NBIS), Crusoe and Lambda.
