AI startup Anthropic lost more than $80 billion after expenses in the first half of this year, the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday. The report was based on a draft document prepared for the company's planned initial public offering (IPO), when a company first sells its shares to the public.

The report said Anthropic had lost $13 billion during the same period a year earlier.

According to the Wall Street Journal, most of the loss, $72 billion, came from accounting charges linked to changes in the value of convertible notes and other financial instruments the company had issued to raise money. Convertible notes are loans that can later be turned into company shares.

Anthropic did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.
