The world's largest community for reverse engineering and analyzing video games has shut down. The closure was caused by people who ignored the basic rules of individual projects and misused artificial intelligence (AI).

Encounter, an administrator of Decomp.dev, announced that the careless misuse of artificial intelligence (AI) was the reason for closing the site. Founded in 2024, Decomp.dev was the world's largest community for tracking progress on reverse engineering the code of classic games and helping developers work together.

Before generative AI became widely used, reverse engineering projects required several people to spend years studying how games worked and rebuilding their code. Special tools and shared knowledge gradually helped people work faster. As generative AI tools such as GPT-6 Astra improved, many more people joined the community. At the same time, the number of users who ignored development ethics and failed to respect each project's rules and standards also grew.

The administrator said the community environment was damaged by these users, leading to the decision to close the site. Each project had its own rules for legal and ethical reasons. For example, some projects did not allow AI use or accepted only contributions that had been checked and confirmed. However, people repeatedly copied projects that were already in progress without permission and used AI to finish their own versions quickly. These actions showed little respect for the people who had worked on the original projects.

The problem also grew because some users confused reverse engineering with simply porting a game to another system. Traditional community members used reverse engineering to learn how programs worked and discover the secrets of original games. They saw this as a useful way to learn and develop new skills. But more users began relying on generative AI while claiming its output showed their own programming ability. They ignored other people's projects and produced large numbers of incomplete ports that could run but did not work properly in every way.

In the official notice, encounter said, "As an era of reverse engineering comes to a close, I want to thank everyone who took part in and contributed to our projects, community, and development. The people who worked on these projects and their passion were what always made everything so fun and rewarding." The administrator also thanked long-time community members and clearly stated that code written by humans within Decomp.dev must not be copied or used in any form.
