Anthropic books $80.7B net loss in first half of 2026 - Cryptopolitan

- Anthropic reported a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first half of 2026.
- About $72 billion of that loss came from accounting changes linked to convertible notes, while revenue grew to $16.3 billion.
- The figures come from a draft document for a planned stock market listing, reported by The Wall Street Journal. They are important because the company that makes Claude is expected to go public next month at a possible value of nearly $2 trillion, although some investors want it to be valued at a lower amount.
Anthropic reported a net loss of $80.7 billion in the first six months of 2026, according to a draft document for its planned stock market listing that The Wall Street Journal reviewed. These figures came out just weeks before the AI company is expected to sell shares to the public at a value of nearly $2 trillion. They have brought more attention to the cost of growing the business.
Most of this reported loss does not mean that the money actually left Anthropic's bank accounts. About $72 billion came from accounting changes linked to changes in the value of convertible notes and other financial products the company issued to raise money, The Wall Street Journal reported.
Anthropic's losses were much lower in the first half of 2025, at about $13 billion.
Even without these accounting changes, Anthropic is spending a lot of money to grow. The Telegraph reported that the company spent nearly $9 billion on computing power and infrastructure in the first half of 2026. This was already more than it spent on these items during all of 2025.
Anthropic's revenue grew to about $16.3 billion in the first half of 2026. Revenue was $1.1 billion during the same period in 2025 and $4.6 billion for the whole of 2025.
How much Anthropic is spending on computing power
Anthropic has made many agreements to secure enough computing power to grow its AI business. Its cloud computing contracts add up to about $450 billion over the next seven to 10 years. This amount could rise to $750 billion as the company works out more deals.
These agreements include about $111 billion for Google Cloud, $110 billion for Amazon Web Services, and $31 billion for Microsoft.
Anthropic has also agreed to spend up to $86 billion to rent Nvidia chips from Nscale and Lambda. It has agreed to spend more than $160 billion to rent Google chips through Broadcom.
A warning about opposition to data centers
Anthropic says that growing opposition to building data centers could create political risks. In its draft listing document, the company said that people opposing new projects were becoming more organized in different areas.
Most of Anthropic's data center capacity is in the United States, although the company has signed letters of intent to build facilities in other countries.
In 2025, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and president Daniela Amodei each received a base salary of about $655,000.
The siblings have promised to give 80% of their ownership stakes to charity. Separately, Anthropic plans to set aside 5% of its shares for a public benefit fund that it announced on October 18.
