Orchestra Bio was founded in 2022. It works on AI agents, which are AI systems that can carry out tasks, to manage the full process of discovering new drugs in biotechnology.
OpenAI has not shared how much it paid to buy Orchestra Bio. However, by 2025, Orchestra Bio had raised about $20 million (approximately 3.167 billion yen) from venture capital firms, including Andreessen Horowitz.
OpenAI says it will bring Orchestra Bio's team and technology into Rosalind, its collection of AI models and tools for life science research.

OpenAI is not the only AI company expanding into medicine and drug research. In April 2026, Anthropic also bought Coefficient Bio, an AI biotechnology company.

OpenAI says its goal is to help scientists use AI throughout the entire process of discovering and developing drugs. This includes exploring ideas, planning experiments, studying results, and organizing the work needed to move promising treatments forward. OpenAI says bringing Orchestra Bio into Rosalind is the first step toward this goal.
In the future, OpenAI aims to work with researchers and partner companies to help make more discoveries and get new medicines to patients faster.
