Anthropic Opaque Systems acquisition and open source
SecurityWeek reported on October 19, 2026, that Anthropic had bought Opaque Systems. In its October 13 announcement, Opaque said that its team was joining Anthropic and that Opaque Systems was closing down.
The AI security technology Opaque developed
Opaque's work began with research at UC Berkeley's RISELab. The company says its confidential-computing technology uses hardware-based protections to keep sensitive data safe while AI systems work with it.
Opaque also says it developed technology to check and verify how AI systems run. It uses cryptographic evidence, which is proof based on mathematics, to show what ran, where it ran, and which rules it followed. These descriptions come from Opaque itself.
Open-source projects Opaque says are still available
Opaque says its open-source work is continuing through AgenTrust. In its project update, the company says these projects are still open and available under their current licenses:
- Weight Custody Manifest
- Agent Manifest
- Confidential MCP
- Confidential A2A
- TRACE
Opaque's statement confirms that these projects remain available under their current licenses. It does not promise that they will continue to be maintained or updated.
