After leaving SpaceXAI, Brian McCarthy joins OpenAI as Vice President of Worldwide Sales. He will help large businesses grow their use of AI safely and get real value from it.

OpenAI has hired Brian McCarthy as its Vice President of Worldwide Sales. In this role, he will help customers and partners get the most value from the money they spend on AI.

Brian announced his new role on LinkedIn. He said: “I’m joining OpenAI to lead the sales team and I’m excited to join forces with my friend Dali Rajic and the team.” Dali became the company's Chief Revenue Officer in August.

A shared vision

Brian added in his LinkedIn post: “What attracted me here is a shared vision for how we can better serve enterprises. I share Sam, Greg, Dali and the team’s belief that AI should help people solve hard problems, do more than they thought possible, and create new opportunities.

“For me, that means helping customers use it safely, keeping people in control, and making sure as many people as possible benefit.

“I’ve spent my career supporting our customers and helping them transform their businesses. AI creates an extraordinary opportunity to take that work further, and I’m looking forward to building alongside our customers, partners and teams around the world.

“My belief that AI is serious technology that needs to serve humanity, not replace it, and its role to benefit humanity, is deeply personal.”

Leaving SpaceXAI

Brian had been working at Cursor, an AI-powered code editor, since February 2026. He was still working there when Elon Musk’s SpaceXAI bought the company.

The Information first reported that Brian was changing jobs. The report said he was leaving SpaceXAI's Cursor unit. Brian gave more details on LinkedIn: “The post was rushed a bit due to the news leaking, but I am not starting for a few weeks.

“That said I wanted to give some love to Cursor, the founders, builders and believers. It was a short but epic ride and [an] incredible outcome for everyone. I loved every minute of it and had the most fun I can remember building. The company was filled with both brilliant and humble people doing amazing work. I believe the best is still to come for the team.

“I say that in great appreciation for competition which is the driving force behind helping companies be their best and deliver for their customers. When competitors are strong, customers and partners win. In this space in particular we need to be collaborating between these great tech giants and AI is such serious technology it takes us all working together to benefit society and our communities to maximise AI safely.”

Brian has held other senior roles, including President of Global Sales and Worldwide Field Operations at Rubrik, and Executive Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) at ThoughtSpot. He has a BA in History and Theology from Franciscan University of Steubenville.
