OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has won the dismissal of a civil lawsuit filed by his sister, Ann Altman. She accused him of sexually abusing her when they were children, more than 20 years ago. US District Judge Zachary Bluestone dismissed the case with prejudice, which means the claims cannot be filed again. Sam Altman has repeatedly denied the allegations. The case had been before a federal court in Missouri since early 2025.

Why the court dismissed the case

According to the BBC, a written court order said Ann Altman failed to attend an independent medical examination on three separate occasions, even though the court had offered her several accommodations. The judge noted that she had been warned that missing the examination could lead to the case being dismissed. Bluestone said her repeated failure to meet the court's requirements for sharing evidence and information had stopped the case from moving forward. He said the court had no other options and that she had not made a meaningful effort to pursue her case.

What the lawsuit alleged

Ann Altman, who is also known as Annie, filed the lawsuit against her older brother, Sam Altman, in the US District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri in January 2025. She alleged that he sexually abused her repeatedly from 1997 to 2006 at the family's home in Clayton, Missouri. According to her complaint, the alleged abuse began when she was three years old and he was 12. She said it happened several times a week. The lawsuit claimed that the alleged abuse caused her lasting emotional distress, mental suffering and depression. She asked for a jury trial and more than $75,000 in damages. Ann Altman was represented by Ryan Mahoney, whose law firm in Illinois handles sexual assault and harassment cases. She had previously made similar allegations on social media platforms, including X. Sam Altman, his mother Connie, and his brothers Jack and Max denied the claims in a joint statement and referred to her mental health challenges.

The Altman family's response

The Altman family has said that Ann Altman faces mental health challenges and that they have been supporting her financially. The family said the allegations emerged as she continued to ask for more money. In court documents, Sam Altman described the lawsuit as an attempt at extortion. He also filed a counterclaim accusing his sister of defamation over social media posts referring to the alleged abuse. The court had allowed that counterclaim to move forward earlier in 2026.
