OpenAI has introduced locked chats in ChatGPT. This feature lets users protect their conversations with a four-digit PIN or a way to confirm their identity on their phone.

OpenAI says on a new support page that the feature does not use end-to-end encryption. It also does not change the company's legal duties related to workplaces or law enforcement. The feature does not automatically change the settings for using conversations to train models or how long OpenAI keeps conversations.

Users can choose whether an older conversation appears in their normal chat history, pinned chats, or search results. Protected conversations are kept together in a new project called “Locked chats.”

To open a locked chat, users must enter a four-digit PIN. They can also use identity checks such as Face ID on an iPhone or authentication features on Android phones. OpenAI says the main goal is to stop people in public or someone briefly using another person's phone from seeing their conversations.

If users reset their account PIN, all locked chats and any files uploaded to their project space will be deleted.

“This cannot be undone, and OpenAI Support cannot recover the deleted content,” the company warns.

OpenAI says it is making the feature available gradually. It may take a few days for the option to appear in some accounts. The feature will be available to free users and people with Go, Plus, and Pro subscriptions.

Users on Android and iOS can use voice mode with locked chats. However, Codex conversations cannot be locked with this feature.
