OpenAI is bringing ChatGPT ads to 26 more countries. This will make its advertising platform available in 89 countries around the world, the company said in an announcement on October 21, 2026. OpenAI also said that more than 100,000 advertisers have run campaigns on ChatGPT since ads first launched just over eight months ago.

New Markets in Latin America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia

After launching in Mexico and Brazil, OpenAI is bringing ChatGPT ads to 14 more countries in Latin America. These include Argentina, Chile, Colombia, and Peru. The company is also launching ads in more markets across Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia. These markets include Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh, and Pakistan.

Advertisers in these new countries can use technology partners to run their ads or manage them directly through Ads Manager. OpenAI said this expansion will help more advertisers, from local shops to large international brands, reach people while they think about what to buy in ChatGPT.

This launch follows recent expansions of ChatGPT ads across Europe and across Southeast Asia and Taiwan.

Where Ads Appear in ChatGPT

Ads appear only on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, and Enterprise plans will continue to have no ads. OpenAI said ads help pay for free and low-cost access to ChatGPT for people around the world. The announcement also repeated the company's mission to make sure artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity.

OpenAI says more than 1.2 billion people use ChatGPT every week. They use it to explore ideas, compare choices, and make decisions. The company said ads can help people discover products and services that meet their needs, including options they might not have found otherwise.

OpenAI gave an example of how an ad might appear. Someone preparing for their first marathon might ask ChatGPT what to eat during race week. They might then adjust the meal suggestions based on their food preferences and how much time they have to cook. OpenAI said an ad for a grocery delivery service related to that conversation could introduce an option the person had not considered. The company said ChatGPT ads let businesses of all sizes show their products to people while they are still weighing their choices.

ChatGPT Go is a low-cost plan that shows ads, just like the Free plan. It costs $8 per month and includes more messaging, image creation, file uploads, and memory, according to a January 16, 2026 post explaining OpenAI's approach to advertising. The post said Go had launched in 171 countries and that OpenAI was bringing the plan to the United States and everywhere ChatGPT is available.

OpenAI's Stated Ads Principles

OpenAI says ads in ChatGPT are clearly labeled and shown separately from ChatGPT's answers. Ads do not change the answers themselves. These promises are part of the company's published advertising principles. In a January post, Fidji Simo explained five main principles: supporting the company's mission, keeping answers independent, protecting private conversations, giving users choice and control, and creating long-term value.

Under these principles, OpenAI says it does not share users' conversations with advertisers and never sells user data to them. Users can turn off ad personalization and delete the data used for ads at any time. The company also says it will always offer a way to use ChatGPT without ads, including a paid plan without ads. The principles state that OpenAI does not try to make people spend more time in ChatGPT and puts user trust and experience ahead of making money. OpenAI said it wants its ads to help users reach their goals and work well for advertisers.

In the same post, written before the advertising test began, OpenAI said it would not show ads to accounts where users say they are under 18 or where the company predicts they are under 18. It also said ads would not appear alongside sensitive or regulated topics, including health, mental health, and politics.

L’Oréal Statement and Next Steps

Asmita Dubey, Chief Digital and Marketing Officer (CDMO) of L’Oréal Group, was quoted in the announcement as saying: “Testing early with OpenAI enables us to pioneer helpful experiences and journeys, from discovery, to evaluation, to agentic commerce, ensuring L’Oréal remains the most trusted, expert answer wherever beauty conversations take place.” Dubey said that as billions of consumers use AI models to discover and explore beauty, the company's mission remains to provide meaningful value and build stronger connections.

Now that ChatGPT ads are available in 89 countries, OpenAI says the next stage will bring new ad formats, goals, buying options, and ways to measure results. The company also said it is exploring more natural ways for businesses to interact with consumers inside ChatGPT.
