Meta’s Muse Tops ChatGPT, Claude in Early User Retention, Apptopia Finds
Meta Platforms’ Muse AI app keeps users coming back more often than ChatGPT and Claude, according to estimates from app research company Apptopia. This gives Meta an early start in the competitive market for AI apps used by everyday people.
During the first four weeks after people installed Muse, its user retention rate was about five percentage points higher on average than the rates for OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude. However, data from early October suggested that this lead might be getting smaller.
Muse has been installed an estimated 14.1 million times. It reached 10 million downloads within 32 days of its launch, even though it was available only in the United States and Canada.
Muse accounted for 32.9% of U.S. downloads of generative AI apps in Apptopia’s analysis. ChatGPT’s share fell to 26.4%, down from 37.5% before Muse launched. Google’s Gemini also lost some of its share of downloads after Meta released its app.
These numbers show the share of new downloads, not the total number of people using each service.
Apptopia also found that people spent more time using Muse than ChatGPT or Claude. However, people who installed Muse also spent more time using the other chatbots. This suggests that Muse may be getting people to use AI more, rather than simply replacing services they already use.
According to the analysis, about one in four Claude users also used Muse. Meanwhile, 11.2% of Gemini users had started using Meta’s app.
For Meta, these early results suggest that Muse could help the company get people to use its AI app regularly. The next test is whether Muse can keep its user retention lead as the first rush of downloads slows down.
