OpenAI Expands ChatGPT Ads to 26 New Countries
OpenAI says it is expanding its ChatGPT Ads service to 26 more countries.
This expansion will bring the advertising service to 80 countries around the world. It comes after more than 100,000 advertisers have run ads on ChatGPT, the artificial intelligence (AI) company announced on Wednesday, October 21.
“Advertising helps support free and low-cost access to ChatGPT for people around the world,” the company said. “Our mission is to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. Ads will appear only on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, and Enterprise subscriptions will remain ad-free.”
The expansion follows the launch of ChatGPT Ads in Mexico and Brazil. OpenAI is now bringing the service to 14 more countries in Latin America, including Argentina, Chile, Colombia and Peru. The company has also launched ads in more countries across Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East. These include Nigeria, South Africa, Serbia, Ukraine, Cambodia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.
“With ChatGPT Ads now available in 89 countries, our next phase of growth will include the development of additional formats, objectives, buying options, and measurement capabilities,” the announcement said. “We are also continuing to explore new ways for businesses to interact with consumers in more native ways in ChatGPT.”
In September, OpenAI said that ads on ChatGPT had started bringing in revenue at a rate of $1 billion per year. The company said it reached this level less than 200 days after launching its advertising service.
OpenAI is on track to book $2.5 billion in advertising revenue over the full year. According to a report by Fortune, it took Google's advertising business about four years to reach a similar pace.
PYMNTS wrote at the time that this growth depends on an audience that advertisers can no longer afford to ignore.
Research by PYMNTS Intelligence found that 80% of people who use AI tools have tried ChatGPT at least once. This is far more than the share who have tried Google Gemini, at 48%, or Microsoft Copilot, at 30%. The research also found that about 25% of consumers are now considered “mainstream” or “power” AI users. This means they use AI often and for many different purposes.
Other research found that ChatGPT's share of consumer product research grew from 2% to 30% over two years.
“Taken together, those numbers point to the same underlying shift: ChatGPT has moved from a tool people used to ask questions into a place where buying decisions actually start, and OpenAI is betting its advertising business can grow as fast as that shift does,” the report said.
