Anthropic adds former Harvard science dean to oversight body
Oct. 21 (Reuters) – Anthropic said on Wednesday that Christopher Stubbs, a former dean of science at Harvard University, had joined its oversight group. This group has the power to appoint most of the AI startup’s board members.
Here are some details:
• The oversight group is called the Long-Term Benefit Trust. It advises Anthropic’s leaders on major decisions about AI risks and how AI could affect society.
• The trust also includes Ben Bernanke, a former chair of the US Federal Reserve, and Richard Fontaine, an expert on national security.
• Stubbs is an experimental physicist and a professor of physics and astronomy at Harvard. He was part of the High-Z Supernova Search Team, which helped discover that the universe is expanding at an increasing rate.
• Anthropic develops the Claude family of AI models. It operates as a Public Benefit Corporation, a type of company that is formally allowed to balance the interests of its shareholders with wider concerns about society.
