The University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School and Penn Engineering have created a new Graduate Certificate of Study in AI and Law.

All first-year students at Penn Carey Law can take part in the certificate program. Graduate students who attend Penn Engineering in person on campus can join in their second year or later.

Students who want to earn the certificate must complete five courses about AI and law. They must also attend four AI-related events, such as workshops, lectures or seminars about teaching.

“One benefit of the Law School’s program, which brings together different fields of study, is that we can work with Penn’s excellent graduate schools to create new programs covering different subjects,” said Amanda Aronoff, managing director of Cross-Disciplinary Programs at Penn Carey Law and director of student engagement for the Francis J. & William Polk Carey JD/MBA Program. “We’re very excited to meet the growing demand for more opportunities to study different fields together as AI becomes increasingly important to the practice of law.”

This certificate is the first step in a growing partnership between Penn Carey Law and Penn Engineering focused on AI and law. Future plans include a way for students to earn certificates from both schools and joint degree programs. These programs will let law and engineering students study the same set of courses. The plans show both schools' commitment to improving education and encouraging new ideas where law and technology meet.
