Google Cloud Expands Model Choice and Flexibility, Brings OpenAI Models to Customers
AI and Data

Today, Google Cloud announced that OpenAI models are coming to its model garden. This makes Google Cloud the only large-scale cloud provider to offer all three leading closed-source large language models (LLMs). It also offers more than 200 models from Google, other companies, and open-source projects on one platform designed for business AI.

Google Cloud has always focused on giving customers choices, strong business controls, and good performance for the price. This announcement builds on those strengths. Customers can choose the models and computing systems they want to run AI agents, helping them balance cost, ability, and speed.

“Google Cloud is a trusted platform for developers and businesses building AI agents, writing software, and putting AI to work. This partnership is an important step in making our most capable models and Codex available where customers are already building, giving them even more choice in how they use frontier AI as we grow the agentic ecosystem together,” said Greg Brockman, President and co-founder, OpenAI.

“We are focused on giving customers a broad selection of models, including those from OpenAI, so they can choose the right model for any given job, helping to deliver optimal quality and lower costs,” said Thomas Kurian, Chief Executive Officer, Google Cloud.

The Right Model for Every Workload

By adding OpenAI's newest models to its model garden, Google Cloud gives teams more choices for different kinds of business tasks:

  • GPT-6-Astra: Built for difficult tasks such as coding, using computers, professional work, and scientific research.

  • GPT 6.1 Sol: Offers intelligence close to Astra at a lower cost for AI agents that write code, use computers, and handle professional tasks.

  • GPT 6.0 Luna: A fast, affordable model for everyday tasks that need to be handled at large scale.

Customers can use the platform to choose and switch models for different tasks based on performance, response time, and cost. They can do this without locking their systems into one design or signing separate contracts with different providers. Developers can choose from hundreds of models in the model garden. OpenAI models are sold directly through Google Cloud Marketplace, so all usage appears on one Google Cloud bill. The costs also count toward customers' existing cloud spending commitments and qualify for Flexible Savings Plans (FSP) across model providers.

Built-in Data Governance and Enterprise Security

Businesses should not have to give up security or follow fewer rules to expand their use of generative AI. Google's Gemini platform was designed with business controls in mind and is already trusted by major organisations around the world. Google Cloud says that using third-party models, including OpenAI models, meets strict business security standards:

  • Strict data boundaries: Customer prompts, background information, and model responses stay within the customer's chosen data boundaries. They are never used to train foundation models. Options for Zero Data Retention (ZDR), which means not keeping customer data, will be available soon.

  • Isolated access boundaries: OpenAI models run on dedicated Google Cloud systems. Confidential Compute, which helps protect data while it is being processed, will be available soon. All requests pass through hardened, isolated gateways. This keeps data moving within Google Cloud's secure environment and prevents third-party model providers from accessing customers' cloud environments without permission.

  • Unified auditing and identity: Every interaction with an AI agent or model uses a verified identity. IT administrators can track activity from beginning to end, use VPC Service Controls to protect their cloud resources, and review audit records across their entire business environment in one system.

Getting Started

  • OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, and GPT-6 Luna models are now starting to become available in a private preview for selected business customers in Google Cloud's model garden. More models will follow soon.

  • Starting today, customers can use these models through APIs and connect their local Codex command-line interface (CLI) and desktop workflows directly to Google's Gemini platform to run models.

  • OpenAI models will soon be available in Google Cloud's Gemini for business and Google Antigravity. This will give businesses and developers more freedom to choose models and use the best one for each task.
