Anthropic’s new Claude Duet AI agent can handle tasks in connected apps, prepare daily updates, and keep working in the background.

Anthropic has announced Claude Duet, a new AI agent that can do tasks, check connected apps, and send you messages without waiting for you to ask. It can prepare morning updates, point out important changes, and keep working even after you close your laptop.

Anthropic announced Claude Duet on October 21, 2026. It is mainly designed for professionals and small-business owners who handle many tasks each day. It runs on Anthropic’s Claude Opus 5.5 model and is being released as an early research preview. At first, people in the United States who have Claude Pro or Max subscriptions can join a waitlist to get access.

What Can Claude Duet Do?

Regular Claude conversations usually start when someone opens the app and asks a question. Claude Duet can start conversations on its own and follow up on work that is already underway.

For example, it can check your connected email and calendar accounts each morning, find tasks that need attention, and prepare a summary for you. During the day, it can warn you about approaching deadlines, write draft replies, and let you know when you need to make a decision.

Anthropic says Duet can also do larger jobs. These include arranging meetings, preparing financial forecasts, building dashboards, making presentations, and creating web apps.

You can communicate with the agent through text or voice messages. It can also use your existing Claude memory, skills, and connected apps. This means you do not have to keep explaining your preferences or past projects each time you work with it.

You can review finished documents, reports, and other work. A separate Tasks tab also shows what Duet is working on.

How Claude Duet Works Across Your Apps

One interesting feature of Claude Duet is that it can work on its own in the cloud. It uses a dedicated virtual computer with its own web browser. This lets the agent keep working even when your laptop is turned off or you have closed the mobile app.

Anthropic says Duet supports more than 6,000 connectors and plugins through the Claude Marketplace. These include connections to Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, QuickBooks, Stripe, and other business apps.

These connections let Duet work across different services. For example, it could check QuickBooks or Stripe for unpaid bills, write reminder emails, and show you the drafts for approval. It can also use its cloud browser to visit and use websites that do not have dedicated connectors.

Claude Duet Can Take Action, but Sensitive Tasks Need Approval

Giving an AI agent access to email, financial details, and business apps naturally raises security concerns.

Anthropic says Claude Duet must get your approval before sending messages, making payments, signing documents, or deleting information. You can review what it plans to do before allowing it to continue.

The agent also supports purchases through Stripe’s Link and Shopify’s Shop Pay. You must confirm these purchases, and the payment systems use virtual cards that can be used only once.

Anthropic has added extra safety measures to help stop sensitive information, such as credit card numbers and government identification details, from being shared.

However, these protections cannot prevent every problem. Anthropic admits that harmful instructions hidden in emails or websites can still create risks.

Claude Duet Price, Availability, and Waitlist

Claude Duet is currently available only as an early research preview for Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States. You need an invitation to use it, and Anthropic is giving access to people on the waitlist in stages.

The app works on iOS and Android, and you can also use it on the web through claude.ai. During the research preview, eligible subscribers can use Claude Duet without paying anything extra.

Current subscription prices in the United States are:

  • Claude Pro: $20 per month or $200 per year.
  • Claude Max: Starts at $100 per month.

Claude Duet has the same usage limits as regular Claude conversations. Its background tasks and regular checks of your accounts also count toward those limits. Using it often could therefore use up your allowance more quickly.

Claude Free, Team, and Enterprise accounts cannot join the first preview. Anthropic plans to offer access to Team and Enterprise users later, but it has not announced a date for a wider release.

Eligible subscribers can sign up through the official Claude Duet waitlist.

What Claude Duet Can’t Do Yet

Although Claude Duet has promising features, it is still an early product with several limits. It checks connected accounts from time to time rather than constantly, so it might miss an urgent message between checks. Anthropic also says the agent may sometimes misunderstand conversations or make mistakes when deciding which tasks need attention first.

Microsoft 365 is not supported yet, and some existing connections, including Slack, have limits. Users also cannot watch or take control of Duet’s cloud browser while it is working on a task.

Anthropic says Duet currently does a better job with professional tasks than with personal errands, such as booking tickets.

Even so, being able to hand off work, receive finished results, and have an AI assistant find tasks without needing constant instructions could be very useful. Claude Duet offers many features, especially for people who manage work across several apps. How reliable it is and how well it makes decisions will determine how useful it becomes as more subscribers get access.
