Anthropic Could File IPO Paperwork as Soon as Friday
Anthropic could make its IPO paperwork public as soon as Friday (Oct. 23). This would bring the company that makes Claude one step closer to what could be the biggest stock market debut ever. The deal would also be a major test of the AI boom, as investors become more concerned about how much money AI companies are spending.
The company is expected to make its S-1 prospectus public as early as Friday, Yahoo Finance reported Wednesday (Oct. 21), citing three people who know about the plans. Anthropic sent a draft of the document to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in June without making it public. Under SEC rules, companies that file privately must make their documents public at least 15 calendar days before they begin presenting the deal to investors. Making the filing public would open the door to a possible stock market listing in November. It would also let everyday investors see the company's finances and risks for the first time. Anthropic did not respond to Yahoo Finance's request for comment.
The planned IPO is expected to be larger than SpaceX's June IPO. Yahoo Finance reported that the deal is widely seen as an important test of how willing investors are to put money into the AI boom.
Citing The Wall Street Journal, the report said Anthropic earned $16.3 billion in revenue during the first half of 2026 and reported a net loss of more than $80 billion. Wall Street expects the company could raise up to $100 billion at a valuation of $2 trillion. Anthropic also told investors last week that its third-quarter revenue rose to $16.8 billion, up from $11.5 billion, and that it made a profit when certain costs are left out. However, the IPO market is becoming more difficult. South Korean data center company Elice saw its share price fall 32% on its first day of trading, while Firmus Grid, which is backed by Nvidia, put its listing plans on hold.
PYMNTS reported Wednesday that most of Anthropic's loss in the first half of the year came from a $72 billion accounting charge linked to bonds that could be converted into shares, rather than from the cash costs of running the business. Some investors are now considering a valuation closer to $1.2 trillion. On Oct. 15, PYMNTS reported that Anthropic is narrowing the revenue gap with OpenAI and has made an adjusted profit for two quarters in a row. Earlier this month, PYMNTS noted that the company hopes to begin trading before Thanksgiving. In September, PYMNTS covered Anthropic's plan to help retailers build AI shopping assistants using Claude. The plan was launched with Visa and Mastercard.
