Turn your shopping, gift-giving, and hosting to-do lists into a simple plan.

Getting ready for Diwali often becomes a family activity. One person may be deciding which sweets to make, another may be keeping track of gifts, and someone else may have just remembered that more people are coming for dinner. There is a lot to look forward to, but there is also plenty to plan, from shopping and cooking to visiting friends and relatives.

ChatGPT has two Indian voices, Neer and Leher, in GPT-Live-1.1. They can make conversations feel more natural. A familiar voice can make it easier to talk about everyday things, such as the dish your family makes every year, what gifts your relatives might like, or how you want to divide your Diwali budget. Tell ChatGPT what matters to your family, and it can suggest ideas that suit your celebrations.

Here are seven ways to use ChatGPT Voice to get ready for the festival. Start a conversation, explain what you need help with, and work through the details together.

  1. Turn Nani's festive recipe into something the family can keep.

Family recipes often use words like “a little” or “you'll know when it's ready” instead of exact measurements. Your grandmother can explain her recipe to ChatGPT Voice, answer questions about the ingredients, and turn her instructions into a written recipe the family can save.

Try saying: “Nani is going to explain her [recipe name] in Hindi, and I want to write it down. Help us record the ingredients and steps. If a quantity isn't clear, ask us instead of guessing.”

  1. Plan your Diwali budget before you start shopping.

Gifts, clothes, sweets, decorations, and travel can quickly use up your money. Tell ChatGPT your spending limit, what you have already bought, and what matters most to you. Using the prices you give it, ask ChatGPT to help divide the money you have left and keep some aside for things you may need at the last minute.

Try saying: “Our Diwali budget is [add amount], and we've already spent [add amount] on travel. Help me plan the rest for gifts for [number] people, groceries, and decorations. Keep [add amount] aside for other expenses.”

  1. Find gifts that show you know the person.

Tell ChatGPT about the people on your gift list, what they like, and how much you want to spend. It can help you think of gift ideas, including homemade gifts and small personal touches. This gives you a list of options before you go shopping.

Try saying: “I'm at [XX mall], and I need Diwali gifts costing less than ₹1,000 each for an aunt who loves gardening, a cousin setting up his first home, and a friend who enjoys cooking. Suggest three thoughtful ideas for each person.”

  1. Plan a festive menu everyone can enjoy.

One relative may avoid onion and garlic, the children may want their favourite foods, and the person hosting may want some time to sit down, too. Tell ChatGPT what everyone likes, how much time you have, and which foods you can prepare in advance.

Try saying: “We're hosting ten people for Diwali dinner, including three children. Two guests don't eat onion or garlic. Help me plan an easy-to-manage menu, with most of the preparation done the evening before.”

  1. Make your shopping trip easier to manage.

Say your shopping list out loud as you remember things you need, such as diyas, flowers, gift bags, groceries, and the outfit you need to collect from the tailor. Ask ChatGPT to organise your list based on the shops you need to visit and the times when you need to collect things.

Try saying: “I have two hours to shop. I need flowers, diyas, ingredients for kheer, and four gift bags. I also need to collect something from the tailor before 6 p.m. Help me organise my stops and check what I might already have at home.”

  1. Share the work with your family.

Tell ChatGPT who is available to help and what each person likes doing. It can suggest how to share the tasks so everyone can agree on a plan. The jobs can include setting the table and cleaning up after the meal.

Try saying: “Four of us are getting the house ready for Diwali. I'm cooking, my partner can run errands, and the children want to help. Make a simple plan with jobs that suit their ages and breaks for everyone.”

  1. Make space for guests who arrive at the last minute.

If dinner for eight suddenly becomes dinner for twelve, tell ChatGPT what is already cooking, what you have in the fridge, and how much time is left. Ask it to help adjust the food quantities and suggest another dish that goes well with the meal and uses ingredients you already have.

Try saying: “Four more people are joining us for dinner in an hour. We planned [dishes] for eight people. Help me work out how to make the food serve everyone and suggest one quick extra dish using the ingredients I have.”

This festive season, let ChatGPT help your family manage the lists, deal with last-minute changes, and answer the yearly question, “Have we forgotten anyone?” Then you can relax and listen to Naani's stories, enjoy another helping of mithai, and take the family photo that needs at least six tries.
