1Password lets AI agents log in without a password

AI agents can now access personal accounts without being given a password, thanks to a new tool called 1Password for Agents. Agents from companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta, and SpaceXSI can use this method. It also makes it less likely that people will take the unsafe step of giving their passwords directly to AI agents.

Almost every task an AI agent does requires it to log in to an account. For example, it might plan a trip or update information in a customer relationship management (CRM) system. Until now, the easiest way was often to paste the password into the chat window. This leaves a copy of the password outside the account owner's control and creates security risks.

1Password wants to prevent this risk. Chief Product Officer Aashish Tripathi says agents will “do real work on our behalf.” He believes that an agent doing a particular task does not need permanent access to the entire account.

Approve access on your own device

With the new system, the agent never receives the password. When it reaches a login page, a unique digital key tells 1Password which agent it is. The user then sees a request asking which account the agent wants to use and what it needs the account for. Only after the user approves does 1Password automatically enter the password on the page.

1Password already offers several ways for agents to work with its systems. For example, it launched Unified Access Pro. This tool manages login details and access rights for people, machine identities, and AI agents. It gives them access only when they need it. After acquiring Apono, 1Password can also link an agent's access rights to the person who assigned the task to it.

Major companies are joining in

OpenAI connects ChatGPT Work and its recently introduced Dots agents to 1Password. Meta's Muse can retrieve login details as soon as the integration is enabled. SpaceXSI's Grok Bot also supports the system.

Claude has supported 1Password in the browser since July. Claude Duet, an agent released on Wednesday, will be added soon. Anthropic Chief Product Officer Ami Vora says 1Password will “soon” automatically fill in login forms using passwords that users already have. Nine other companies are also building their own integrations.
