OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini are competitors in the race between big tech companies to build the best AI tools.
But in an unexpected move, the two companies have decided to work together. The deal will make OpenAI's most advanced AI models, including the GPT-6 series, and its Codex coding tools available through Google Cloud's Model Garden. OpenAI's models and Codex tools also became available on Amazon Bedrock earlier this year. That service offers the GPT-6 and GPT-5.6 model lines, along with specialized Daybreak models for cybersecurity.
Microsoft remains OpenAI's main cloud partner, but this new deal with Google means more major cloud platforms will offer OpenAI's AI models.
With that in mind, here's what the partnership means for businesses and developers that use ChatGPT and Google Cloud.

OpenAI's most advanced AI models will be available for Google Cloud customers to buy. The models are also planned to become available in Google Antigravity and Gemini Agent. This will give developers and businesses more AI tools to choose from, instead of limiting them to Google's Gemini models.
These users already work in familiar tools such as Google Cloud's Model Garden. They will be able to use OpenAI's models there alongside Google's own models, without having to move to a different platform. This could make it easier to compare models, choose the right one for a specific task, and build workflows that use AI systems from both OpenAI and Google.
The main goal of this partnership is to give businesses and developers access to OpenAI's most advanced models through Google Cloud. The companies have not announced this option for everyday ChatGPT and Gemini users.
OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol, and GPT-6 Luna models have started becoming available in a private preview for selected business customers through Google Cloud's Model Garden. More models are expected to arrive later, but no date has been announced.
GPT-6 Astra is designed for complex tasks such as coding, using computers, professional work, and scientific research. GPT-6.1 Sol has similar intelligence and can also handle tasks involving AI agents that write code, computer use, and professional work. GPT-6 Luna is a lower-cost model designed for everyday work tasks that need to be handled on a large scale.
In an official blog post, OpenAI explained that the partnership focuses on safety and control for businesses using its models through Google Cloud. OpenAI said: "For organizations in regulated industries, deploying AI requires control over who can access sensitive data and how it is used." The company added: "The integration will pair OpenAI's frontier models with Google Cloud's built-in access controls, centralized data governance, and high-performance infrastructure to support demanding enterprise workloads."
Google Cloud already offers more than 200 AI models from Google, other companies, and open-model projects through one platform for business AI. Adding OpenAI's most advanced models gives businesses and developers even more choices when deciding which models best fit their work.
Bottom line
OpenAI's official blog post includes important comments from two major figures in the AI industry.
Greg Brockman, OpenAI's president and co-founder, described Google Cloud as "a leading platform for developers and businesses building AI agents." Thomas Kurian, the CEO of Google Cloud, said: "we are focused on giving customers a broad selection of models, including those from OpenAI, so they can choose the right model for any given job." These comments show that OpenAI and Google want to make their platforms a major place for businesses to find and use advanced AI models.
This does not mean that all Gemini users can suddenly switch to GPT models in Google Cloud's Model Garden. However, that could become possible in the future.
