OpenAI graphic saying ChatGPT Ads is expanding to 26 new countries on an orange background

Ads are coming to ChatGPT in Nigeria. On 21 October, OpenAI announced that businesses in Nigeria and South Africa can now place ads inside ChatGPT. This is part of a bigger plan to bring ads to 26 more countries. If you use ChatGPT's Free or Go plan, you may start seeing paid ads below some answers. If you own a business, you now have another place to advertise. The starting budget is ₦3,250 a day for an advertising account that pays in naira.

The main things to know

OpenAI now allows businesses in Nigeria and South Africa to advertise on ChatGPT. This brings the total number of countries where ChatGPT advertising is available to 89. Only people using the Free and Go plans will see ads. Businesses paying in naira must set a budget of at least ₦3,250 a day.

  1. On 21 October 2026, OpenAI announced that ChatGPT Ads had expanded to 26 more countries, including Nigeria and South Africa. Ads are now available to businesses in 89 countries.
  2. Ads appear only for adults using the Free and Go plans. People using Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu will not see ads.
  3. People on the Free plan can turn off ads, but they must accept fewer messages and give up features such as image generation. People on the Go plan cannot turn ads off.
  4. Businesses with accounts billed in naira need a daily budget of at least ₦3,250. For accounts billed in US dollars, the minimum is $25 a day. That was about ₦33,610 using the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) exchange rate of ₦1,344.40 per dollar on 22 October.
  5. OpenAI has not yet said exactly when people using the Free and Go plans in Nigeria will begin seeing ads.

Put simply: ChatGPT will soon be a little more like Facebook or Google for people who use it without paying. You can still use ChatGPT for free, but some answers may have a paid suggestion underneath them. For Nigerian businesses, this is the first chance to show their products to people while those people are asking ChatGPT which phone, school or bank they should choose.

What ChatGPT ads will look like in Nigeria

OpenAI says ads will be separate from ChatGPT's answers. They will be clearly marked as ads and will not change the answers ChatGPT gives you. According to OpenAI's help page about ads, these are the rules:

  • People using the Free and Go plans can see ads. People who use ChatGPT without signing in may also see ads, but only ads that are suitable for people of all ages.
  • People with Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu accounts will not see ads.
  • Accounts that OpenAI believes belong to people under 18 will not show ads.
  • Ads will not appear next to conversations about personal health, mental health or politics. Political advertising is also not allowed.
  • Ads will not appear in Temporary Chats.

OpenAI also says advertisers cannot read your ChatGPT conversations and that OpenAI does not sell your personal data. ChatGPT ads first appeared in the United States in February 2026. OpenAI says more than 100,000 advertisers have used them since then.

Can you turn off ChatGPT ads?

You can turn off ads in some cases. It depends on which ChatGPT plan you use.

  • Free plan: You can stop seeing ads, but you will lose some features. Open Settings, go to Ads controls, choose “Change plan to go ad-free”, and then select “Reduce message limits”. You will be allowed to send fewer messages and will lose features such as image generation and deep research. You can choose to see ads again later.
  • Go plan: There is no setting to remove ads. Even though you pay for Go, you will still see ads.
  • Plus and higher plans: You will not see any ads.

No matter which plan you use, you can stop ads from being chosen based on some of your personal information. Open Settings, go to Ads controls, and turn off “Personalize ads” and “Past chats and memory”. Then tap “Delete ads data”. OpenAI says it may take up to 30 days to remove that data. Our guide to ChatGPT ad settings explains what each setting does and how advertisers can use an email list to reach you.

How much ChatGPT advertising costs in naira

OpenAI lets businesses buy ads through its Ads Manager, which they can use themselves, or through advertising technology partners. OpenAI's help pages show the smallest daily budget allowed for each payment currency, including the Nigerian naira. If your advertising account is billed in naira, you must set a budget of at least ₦3,250 a day. OpenAI works out your spending using a seven-day average, so you might spend more on some days than others. If you choose the lowest budget, here is how much you could spend:

  • Smallest daily budget: ₦3,250.
  • Highest amount that can be spent in one day: Twice the daily budget, or ₦6,500.
  • Highest amount that can be spent in seven days: Seven times the daily budget, or ₦22,750.
  • Cost of a 30-day campaign at the lowest budget: About ₦97,500.

If your advertising account is billed in US dollars, the smallest daily budget is higher: $25. That was about ₦33,610 using the CBN's official exchange rate of ₦1,344.40 for one dollar on 22 October 2026. Running ads for 30 days at this minimum would cost about $750, or roughly ₦1.01 million. The amount you actually pay could be higher because your bank may use a different dollar exchange rate and charge extra card fees. Businesses can set up campaigns to get people to view their ads, click on them or buy something. OpenAI has not published a fixed price for these results.

There is another rule small businesses should know. OpenAI says some new accounts using its self-service advertising system may only be allowed to show ads in their own country at first. To advertise in other countries, they must first complete identity checks and spend a required amount on ads in their home country.

What is still unclear

  • We do not know the exact date when people using ChatGPT's Free and Go plans in Nigeria will start seeing ads. OpenAI's announcement is about making advertising available to businesses. Its help page says ads will appear for users little by little.
  • We do not know how OpenAI decides which currency an advertising account uses. Its budget table includes the naira, but its help pages do not explain whether every Nigerian business can choose to pay in naira.
  • We do not know how many ads someone using the Free plan will see each day.

If you only use the free version of ChatGPT, you can make the settings change explained above in about one minute. To learn which features you can still use without paying, read our guide to what free ChatGPT users get with GPT-6. If you own a business, it may be useful to wait until you can see ads appearing in your own ChatGPT before spending money. You can then look at how other businesses' ads appear and learn from them without paying anything.
