What some of Anthropic’s backers are reportedly worth before its IPO

Anthropic is expected to start selling shares to the public for the first time this year. This is called an IPO, and the company could be valued at as much as $2 trillion. If that happens, people and firms that invested in Anthropic, whether early or later, could make a lot of money. But many investors already own shares worth billions of dollars, even at Anthropic's latest private valuation of $965 billion. Here is how much some investors' shares are worth at that valuation, according to Bloomberg.
Eric Schmidt: The former Google CEO invested in Anthropic in 2021, during its Series A funding round, when the young company was valued at $461 million, according to PitchBook data. Today, Schmidt owns about 1% of Anthropic. At its current private valuation, his shares are worth nearly $10 billion.
Iconiq: The investment firm put $6 billion into Anthropic last year, when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That investment is now worth $17 billion. Its value could double when Anthropic goes public.
Menlo Ventures: This venture capital firm led Anthropic's Series D funding round. It has invested more than $1 billion in Anthropic over time. Its shares are now worth $14 billion.
Sequoia: This well-known venture capital firm first invested in Anthropic earlier this year, when the company was already valued at $380 billion. Sequoia invested $3 billion and received about 1% ownership of Anthropic. Its investment has already more than doubled in value.
Sound Ventures: Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher started this investment firm. It invested $35 million in Anthropic's Series C funding round in 2023. Since then, it has put another $400 million into the company. Its shares are now worth billions of dollars. (Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to start a new venture capital firm.)
Spark Capital: Spark Capital is the only venture capital firm known to have a seat on Anthropic's board of directors. It invested $75 million in the same Series C funding round in 2023, when Anthropic was valued at $5 billion. Its shares are now worth $7 billion, more than 90 times the value of its original investment.
