Coinbase Now Lets AI Agents Trade in Your Crypto Account. What Could Go Wrong?

Coinbase (NASDAQ: COIN | COIN Price Prediction) recently announced that people can now use AI assistants to make trades in their Coinbase accounts. On October 22, 2026, Coinbase posted on X that “Coinbase is open for AI agents.” This means users can connect AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, and Muse to buy and sell cryptocurrencies, stocks, and derivatives. Derivatives are financial products whose value depends on something else, such as a stock or cryptocurrency. Users can manage these trades through one conversation using Coinbase's Everything Exchange.
Even though this was a big new feature, investors did not react strongly. Coinbase shares, which trade under the symbol COIN, closed at about $169 on October 22, down 4.5%. The day before, the shares had risen 5% after news about new GENIUS Act rules. Most of the October 22 drop happened before Coinbase announced the AI feature near the end of the trading day. The shares had already been trading at around $169 earlier.
Coinbase Users Can Start Using AI Agents Right Away
The new feature is already available. Coinbase lets users decide which groups of investments, called portfolios, an AI assistant can use. Users can also look at trade orders before they go through and disconnect the AI assistant whenever they want.
To connect an AI assistant, Coinbase uses something called an MCP server. MCP stands for Model Context Protocol. It is a standard way for AI assistants to connect with other apps and services. For example, someone using ChatGPT can add agents.coinbase.com/mcp as a custom server. They can then sign in to Coinbase and use an approval screen to choose which portfolios the AI assistant is allowed to access.
Coinbase has approved several AI assistants to use this feature. They include ChatGPT, Grok, Grok Bot, Muse, Perplexity Computer, Claude, Claude Code, and Codex CLI. An update in September 2026 also added support for U.S. stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs), which are groups of investments people can buy and sell like stocks. The update also added x402 payments. These let AI assistants pay for market information using money from a user's USD Coin (CRYPTO: USDC) balance. However, Coinbase has not shared exact information about the fees for this feature, how many people use it, or how much money the company hopes to make from it.
AI Agents Could Help Coinbase Earn More Trading Fees, but Not Yet
For now, this new feature does not seem likely to make much difference to Coinbase's profits. In the second quarter of 2026, Coinbase reported revenue of $1.22 billion. That was 18.5% less than the same period one year earlier. The company also reported a loss of $1.36 per share under standard accounting rules, known as GAAP. Revenue from consumer transactions, which mainly comes from fees paid by everyday traders, fell 20% to $452 million.
During Coinbase's July 30 earnings call, CEO Brian Armstrong said that agentic finance, which means AI assistants handling financial tasks, is still very new. He also said Coinbase did not have specific predictions to share. If AI assistants start making more trades, Coinbase could earn more money from consumer trading fees in the future. This could be especially true if the wider cryptocurrency market starts rising again. But Coinbase has not yet reported any revenue earned from AI agents.
Coinbase Has Safety Features, but Users Still Face Most of the Risk
One of the biggest dangers is that an AI assistant might misunderstand what a user wants. For example, someone might ask it to buy “a little crypto.” But what does “a little” mean? The AI has to decide, and the user is still responsible for the trade. Another danger is something called prompt injection. This happens when hidden instructions in text trick an AI assistant into doing something its owner did not want. Unsafe or dishonest AI tools could also put Coinbase login information at risk. Giving an AI assistant permission to do too many things can make these problems worse.
Coinbase recommends making a separate portfolio just for AI trading. Users should put only money they can afford to lose into that portfolio and allow the AI assistant to access only that account. This can help keep possible losses small. Unlike trading bots that work through Telegram, Coinbase keeps users' money in an account on a regulated cryptocurrency exchange. It also lets users review orders before they happen and turn off the AI connection for safety.
Armstrong has also said he believes AI assistants will choose financial systems that are trustworthy, safe, and follow the rules. He thinks this will make Coinbase's services attractive to them. According to reports, Coinbase handles more than 99% of the stablecoin trading volume for transactions made by AI agents on Base, Coinbase's blockchain network. Stablecoins are cryptocurrencies designed to keep a steady value. This large share helps show Coinbase's strong position in this area.
Does AI Trading Change Anything for People Who Own COIN Shares?
For now, we do not think Coinbase's new AI trading feature will make much difference to people who own COIN shares. The feature is useful and has reasonable safety protections, but investors seem right not to get too excited yet. Coinbase has not shown that the feature is bringing in more revenue. For users, the main dangers are that the AI could make a bad trade or that someone could take control of the AI assistant. Keeping a small, separate portfolio for AI trading can help limit how much money they might lose.
For COIN shareholders, the biggest downside may simply be having to wait to see whether the feature becomes valuable. We might change our view if Coinbase's earnings report for the third quarter of 2026 shows meaningful numbers about how much AI agents are trading or how much revenue they are bringing in. Until then, a rise in Coinbase's share price back above $177 could be an important sign. That was the closing price on October 21 and is about 5% higher than the current price. Reaching that level could suggest investors are starting to see more value in the new AI trading feature.
