Ambassador for Cyber Affairs, Artificial Intelligence and Critical Technology

Today, I announce that Dr Derek Bopping has been appointed as Australia's next Ambassador for Cyber Affairs, Artificial Intelligence and Critical Technology.
Cyber issues, artificial intelligence and other important technologies are changing every part of international relations. They are essential to Australia's national security and ability to keep its economy strong during difficult times. They also play a major role in protecting human rights and freedoms, supporting global prosperity and sustainable development, and maintaining international stability.
For Australia, leading in these areas is a foreign policy priority. It is important for protecting Australia's independence and advancing its strategic interests in a world where countries are increasingly competing for power and influence.
Dr Bopping is a senior official at the Australian Signals Directorate (ASD). Most recently, he served as Head of Preparedness and Business Optimisation and led the ASD's State Office in Melbourne.
He has previously worked overseas in Washington, D.C. He has also led the ASD's Cyber Engagement and Strategy Division and the Counter-Terrorism Coordination Centre at the Department of Home Affairs.
Dr Bopping has shown strong leadership in building cybersecurity partnerships between government and industry. His experience will help him advance Australia's strategic interests and strengthen cooperation between countries on cyber issues, artificial intelligence and critical technology.
I thank outgoing Ambassador Jessica Hunter for her work to advance Australia's interests in cyber affairs and critical technology since 2025.
