The British government announced on Saturday that it would provide about £600 million ($800 million) in funding, mainly to protect people from health and security threats linked to artificial intelligence (AI).

Most of the money will go to a new project to protect people from biological threats. This includes £100 million for a lab that will use AI to find biological threats and £65 million to develop ways to fight harmful germs.

AI minister Kanishka Narayan said the goal was to make the AI Biosecurity Lab a leading institution around the world. He said it would bring together top scientists to protect people from new biological threats.

Technology companies OpenAI and Anthropic will provide up to £200 million in credits that can be used to access their AI models for the biological safety project.

Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research, a London-based startup that uses AI in life sciences, will provide other kinds of support.

The British government will give its existing AI Security Institute an extra £120 million.

Another £130 million will fund new projects to improve online security for important services and the wider economy. These projects are called the National Cyber Shield and the National Exposure and Real-Time Vulnerability Centre.

A fund worth £60 million will invest in British companies that use AI to improve robotics, machines that can work on their own, and manufacturing.

Another £60 million will pay for AI research and contracts to buy AI-related services and products.

An extra £23 million will support research into how AI affects the economy.

£18 million will go towards setting up a new academy to teach chip design.

£15 million will fund a prize for AI solutions to public policy problems. Healthcare will be the first area of focus.

£30 million will go to mayors in different regions to support local AI projects.

The UK's National Cyber Security Centre will receive an unspecified amount of money to expand its work in Manchester.

Anthropic alone spent more than $12 billion on running its business last year.
