OpenAI acquired his startup in 2024. Now Alexander Embiricos leads a new AI product
Alexander Embiricos spent five years building a product that helped software engineers work together. OpenAI acquired his startup, called Multi, in 2024. After the deal, he became a product lead for Codex, OpenAI's AI tool for writing and working with code. He later took on a wider leadership role in product development at the company.
His career has moved from building tools for people working together from different places to creating AI products that can handle more complex tasks.
In a December 2025 interview with Lenny Rachitsky, Embiricos talked about his experience building Multi and his work on Codex, which helps developers complete software engineering tasks.
The Startup He Spent Five Years Building
Embiricos co-founded Multi with Charley Ho and served as its chief executive officer (CEO). The company was previously called Remotion. It built a tool that helped remote teams work together through video calls and shared screens.
The platform let up to 10 people share screens and work together. It also offered customizable keyboard shortcuts and automatically created links to code, designs and documents. Its goal was to help software engineers work on projects together without relying only on regular video calls.
Multi had raised $13 million from investors Greylock and First Round Capital before OpenAI bought it, according to a TechCrunch report.

Why OpenAI Acquired Multi
OpenAI announced that it had acquired Multi on June 24, 2024. The deal was described as an acqui-hire, meaning a company is bought mainly to bring its team into the new company. Most of Multi's team, which had about five people, was expected to join OpenAI.
Multi also announced that its service would close after July 24, 2024. This ended its time as an independent collaboration platform.
After the announcement, Embiricos said, “We’re beyond excited to share that Multi is joining OpenAI,” and added, “Thank you to everybody who used Multi. It was a privilege building with you, and we learned a ton from you.”
The acquisition marked a change in direction for Embiricos and his team. In its announcement, Multi said it had been exploring how people could use AI to work with computers. According to VentureBeat, Embiricos also announced that he had joined OpenAI's ChatGPT desktop team.
How Alexander Embiricos Went From Multi to Codex
Embiricos later became a product lead on OpenAI's Codex team.
This job was different from his work at Multi. Multi focused on helping people work together remotely, while Codex was built to help people carry out coding tasks directly.
In a discussion published by Andreessen Horowitz in September 2025, Embiricos talked about how Codex was being developed, its early results and the safety problems involved in building AI agents that can do software engineering work.
His work on Codex made him a key part of OpenAI's efforts to build AI tools for software developers.
What Embiricos Is Working on at OpenAI Now
Embiricos has since moved into a broader product leadership role. In October 2026, TechCrunch identified him as the product lead for Dots, OpenAI's always-on personal AI agent. Dots is designed to work toward goals in the background and connect with users' apps.
