Anthropic STEM Fellowship 2027 (up to $167,000)

Deadline: October 28, 2026
Applications are now open for the Anthropic STEM Fellowship 2027. The Anthropic STEM Fellows Program brings researchers and experts in science and engineering to Anthropic for four months. During this time, they work with Claude to tackle major challenges in their fields.
Fellows work in small groups with others in related fields. They use their deep knowledge of their subjects, along with Anthropic's most advanced AI models and internal tools, to identify the hardest unsolved problems in their fields. They build datasets and simulations to test and train Claude on these problems. They also find specific areas where Claude does not perform well.
The program is looking for Fellows from across science and engineering. Previous experience in machine learning is useful but not required. Strong scientific judgment and the ability to learn quickly are more important. The first group included more than 20 STEM Fellows working in mathematics, physics, life sciences, and engineering. They took part from June to September 2026. The problems they developed are now used to train Claude and in one of Anthropic's internal science evaluations.
Key Responsibilities
The main responsibilities include:
- Setting major challenges for your field: finding difficult problems that may take a long time to solve, where Claude does not yet meet expert standards, and deciding what meaningful progress would look like.
- Building complete datasets, simulations, and strict tests that are difficult to fool. These tests check whether AI models can plan experiments, understand data, and explain how things work. Fellows also find cases where models give confident but incorrect answers.
- Using Claude to work on unsolved problems in your field, applying methods that give the model more computing time while answering, and connecting the scientific tools and software used in your field.
Benefits
- $100,000–$167,000 USD for the four-month fellowship, equal to an annual rate of $300,000–$500,000 USD, along with other benefits.
Eligibility
- You are excited about AI's potential to reason through difficult questions in your field, especially those that require expert judgment.
- You have hands-on experience using Claude and Claude Code in your daily work.
- You have a PhD in a STEM field and several years of experience, such as working as a postdoctoral researcher or faculty member.
- You are comfortable working in a fast-paced environment, taking initiative, and delivering clear results over a few months.
- You already have authorization to work in the United States for the entire program.
Application
Applications are open until October 28, 2026, and Anthropic plans to make offers by November 20. Later stages of the selection process will usually include an exercise to complete at home and discussions with the research team about your research interests and possible projects.
