The UK Is Investing $134 Million Into An AI Biosecurity Lab
OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind are supporting the project.
The UK government has set up the AI Biosecurity Lab (AIBL) as part of its National AI Biosecurity Initiative. It has promised £100 million ($134 million) to fund the project, which will also receive support from OpenAI, Anthropic and Google DeepMind. The lab will bring together experts in biosecurity and life sciences. They will use advanced AI systems to find biological threats and help develop vaccines and medical treatments more quickly. The lab will be an independent, non-profit organization, but it will also work with government organizations and universities.
In its announcement, the UK government said AI systems are "creating unprecedented opportunities for scientific discovery." However, they are also creating "new biological risks and could lower barriers to harmful activity." For example, an AI research lab in California recently said it had used AI to create a virus and then given it to a human patient. The virus was designed to infect bacteria that resist antibiotics, not to cause harm. Still, the work shows how advanced AI can be used in biotechnology. The UK government said, "AIBL's cutting-edge research will strengthen UK and global resilience to a wide range of biological risks, including those enabled by advances in AI."
Kanishka Narayan, Britain's AI minister, said the lab "will be a major new global institution." He said it would bring together leading scientific experts to protect people from new biological threats and help Britain become a world leader in AI safety and security.
OpenAI is supporting the project by providing £100 million in credits, which the lab can use to access its most advanced AI models and computing systems. Anthropic will also provide the lab with £100 million in model credits. The lab will work with Google DeepMind and Basecamp Research, a UK company that uses AI in life sciences. DeepMind's biosecurity experts will work with the lab on research and give it access to advanced Gemini AI models. Basecamp Research will provide AI models designed for biology, along with technical knowledge to help tackle biosecurity challenges.
