Shigeru Miyamoto on AI and What It Means to Create
As generative AI becomes more common in video game development, more famous game creators are being asked what they think about it. Shigeru Miyamoto says generative AI could help people better understand what it means to create something. It could do this by making a clearer difference between the human ideas behind a design and the routine work needed to make it.
Miyamoto is a famous game developer at Nintendo. He created the Super Mario, The Legend of Zelda, and Pikmin series, among others. He has now shared his thoughts on generative AI. He believes there is still plenty of room for human creators, especially those who put clear ideas and goals at the heart of their work.
Shigeru Miyamoto Says AI Can Help People Focus on Creativity

After receiving Japan's Order of Culture, Miyamoto spoke with Denfaminicogamer. During the interview, he was asked how he thinks generative AI will affect gaming culture as a whole. First, he talked about how design has changed over the years. He then explained that these tools could make the difference between creating something and doing the work needed to produce it much clearer.
Miyamoto shared a view similar to comments made by fellow Nintendo creator Masahiro Sakurai. He said he believes AI tools will help people pay more attention to the human touch and the role of human creators. He also believes that only projects created by humans will truly stand the test of time.
“As AI becomes able to handle more and more different tasks, it will give everyone more chances to think seriously about what it really means to ‘create.’ I think that’s a very good thing,” he said. “I don’t know how much further AI will develop, or whether it will ever reach a point where it can do everything, including ‘creating.’ But right now, I think there is still plenty we can do.”
People in the gaming industry have many different views about generative AI and how it might change the way games are made. Some companies, including Sony and Epic, are fully committed to AI. Others believe it is more important than ever for human creators to stand out among large amounts of low-quality AI-made content.
