On October 25, 2026, the question of whether to use Claude, Gemini or ChatGPT became one of the most searched AI topics. The numbers behind the comparison are clearer than many articles suggest. Anthropic's documentation says that Claude 4.6 and later models can handle a context window of up to 1 million tokens. There are two exceptions: Claude Haiku 5.5 and Claude Mythos Preview. OpenAI's published figures show that ChatGPT's largest reasoning context window is 400K tokens, available only on the Pro plan.

This difference helps answer the question for many people. Fello AI and Mashable are among the publications that have focused on comparing all three assistants. We also looked at prices in our earlier article about Gemini versus ChatGPT. This article takes a different approach. It explains what we could confirm about each assistant, points out what remains unknown, and provides a way to choose between them in five minutes.

There is one important warning. We could verify very little about Gemini for this report. We could not confirm any current Gemini model names, subscription prices, context limits or benchmark results. We therefore do not provide figures for those details. When we discuss Gemini below, we either use results from a developer survey or clearly label a statement as our own editorial judgment.

Claude vs Gemini vs ChatGPT: The Short Answer

There is no reliable evidence that one of these three assistants is the best choice for everyone. The information we could verify does not support naming one overall winner. Instead, it supports recommendations based on what you need to do. We clearly label these recommendations as editorial judgments.

Choose Claude if you work with very large documents, long coding sessions or projects that require an assistant to consider many details at once. Claude 4.6 and later models have the largest confirmed context window of the three, at up to 1 million tokens. Choose ChatGPT if you want several subscription levels, a familiar interface and a large reasoning context window on a consumer plan. ChatGPT Pro offers 400K tokens. Choose Gemini if you already do most of your work with Google products. However, check Google's official pages for current limits and prices before paying, because we could not verify those details.

Many people who use AI heavily choose more than one assistant instead of picking just one. The Stack Overflow survey data discussed below shows that developers use several assistants. This makes sense because each tool has different limits and prices. If you can pay for only one subscription, choose the one that best handles your longest and most common task, rather than the one with the most attention-grabbing headline.

Why This Comparison Is Trending Today

Three things have pushed the debate about Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT to the top of search results this week. First, subscription plans keep changing. Claude now lists four named plans: Free, Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x. ChatGPT lists Free, Go, Plus and Pro. People who bought a plan a few months ago may find that the available choices have changed.

Second, context windows have become a major selling point. A year ago, most chatbot comparisons focused on writing quality and occasional benchmark charts. Now, readers first want to know how much text each assistant can process at once and how much it costs each month. On paper, this gives Anthropic an advantage: 1 million tokens is 2.5 times ChatGPT's 400K reasoning limit and about 37 times the 27K tokens available to a Free ChatGPT user in GPT Instant.

Third, yearly subscriptions have become part of the decision. Claude's pricing page lists a monthly equivalent of $17 when you pay annually, with $200 charged upfront. That is a significant commitment. It makes choosing a plan more important than trying a month-to-month subscription. Readers want to know whether their choice will still make sense in March.

What the Confirmed Record Shows, and What It Does Not

Before comparing the assistants, we need to separate confirmed facts from information we could not verify. The table below shows the information we could confirm using Anthropic's documentation and pricing page, OpenAI's pricing page, and the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey.

The missing information is just as important as the confirmed figures. We could not verify ChatGPT's prices in dollars, the current ChatGPT model names for this week, or current details from Google. We also found no confirmed benchmark that directly ranks all three assistants. Any article that declares a clear winner based on these details is relying on information we could not verify.

Claude's 1 Million Token Window and Its Exceptions

Anthropic's documentation says Claude 4.6 and later models support a context window of up to 1 million tokens. A common rule of thumb is that one token equals about three-quarters of an English word. That means this window can hold roughly 750,000 words. It could fit several long novels, a large software codebase or many contracts in one prompt.

The exceptions are easy to overlook. According to Anthropic's documentation, Claude Haiku 5.5 and Claude Mythos Preview do not support the full 1 million token window. If you choose a smaller, cheaper model in the Claude family, you may lose the very feature that made Claude attractive. Check the exact model name before uploading a 400-page document.

A larger context window does not automatically mean better memory or understanding. Processing long prompts costs more and can make it harder for a model to focus on the details that matter most. Think of the 1 million token limit as a maximum that makes certain tasks possible, not a promise that the model will pay equal attention to every page. Our earlier comparison of Claude and GPT agent models explains more about how these assistants perform during long-running agent tasks.

ChatGPT's Context Tiers From Free to Pro

ChatGPT's context limits depend on the subscription plan and the mode you use. GPT Instant is designed for quick, everyday tasks. Reasoning mode uses more computing power to work through difficult problems and has a larger context window. OpenAI's pricing page lists these limits.

ChatGPT planGPT Instant contextReasoning context
Free27KNot in our verified record
Go54K256K
Plus54K256K
Pro128K400K

Two things stand out. Go and Plus have the same context limits, so the context window alone does not explain why you would pay more for Plus instead of Go. The difference between Plus and Pro is much larger. Instant context grows from 54K to 128K, more than doubling. Reasoning context increases from 256K to 400K, a rise of about 56%.

On Go and Plus, reasoning mode has a context window about 4.7 times larger than Instant mode: 256K compared with 54K. This shows where OpenAI expects users to do more demanding work. If you paste a long report into the quick mode on a Plus plan, you may reach the 54K limit well before reaching Claude's larger limit. OpenAI's help center also has a separate page about ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu models and limits. It explains that workplace and school plans have their own rules, separate from the consumer plans listed above.

Gemini: The Gap in the Record

Gemini is the hardest of the three assistants to compare with the information available to us. Our research did not find clearly confirmed Gemini-specific facts for October 2026. We could not verify a current model name, subscription price, context window or official benchmark. Using remembered figures could mean giving readers outdated information.

We do have information from developers. In the 2025 Stack Overflow survey, 47.4% of respondents said they used Google Gemini as a ready-to-use AI assistant. Another 35.3% said they had used Gemini Flash models for development work during the previous year. These figures show that Gemini has a meaningful user base. However, the data is from last year and tells us little about the models available today.

If you are considering Gemini, check three things on Google's official subscription page. How large is the context window included in your plan? Which model powers the default chat? How much will the subscription cost after any trial ends? We asked the same three questions about Claude and ChatGPT above. A fair comparison requires the same information for all three assistants. In our editorial view, Gemini's strongest selling point may be how well it fits into existing workflows, because many people already use Google products every day. This is our judgment, not a confirmed advantage.

Pricing and Plans: $17 a Month Against Tiered Ladders

Claude's pricing page lists a monthly equivalent of $17 with an annual subscription discount. The full $200 is charged upfront. Dividing $200 by 12 gives about $16.67 per month, which rounds to the listed $17. The page names four plans: Free, Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x. The 5x and 20x names suggest that these plans allow more usage, but the exact multipliers are not explained in the information we could verify.

ChatGPT offers four levels, from Free through Go and Plus to Pro. The context figures show that each level offers different limits in at least some modes. We could not verify ChatGPT's prices in dollars for this report, so check OpenAI's official pricing page before deciding how much to spend. The same advice applies to Gemini.

Think carefully before choosing annual billing. Paying $200 upfront saves money only if you still prefer the assistant ten months later. AI products receive new models every few weeks, and a competitor's next release could change your decision. One sensible approach is to use a monthly subscription for 30 days and record which tasks you actually give the assistant. Consider paying for a full year only after you understand your usage. Developers who access models through an API pay under a different pricing system. Our DeepSeek versus Claude API pricing breakdown explains that system in more detail.

What Developers Report Using

The strongest independent data we can cite about how widely these tools are used comes from the 2025 Stack Overflow Developer Survey. The survey predates the model lineups available this month, so it shows what developers used at the time rather than which assistant is best today. The figures below come from the Stack Overflow technology results page:

  • "81.4% of surveyed developers said they used OpenAI GPT models for development work in the past year." (Stack Overflow, 2025 Developer Survey)
  • "42.8% of surveyed developers said they used Claude Sonnet models for development work in the past year." (Stack Overflow, 2025 Developer Survey)
  • "35.3% of surveyed developers said they used Gemini Flash models for development work in the past year." (Stack Overflow, 2025 Developer Survey)

For ready-to-use AI assistants, the survey's AI section reported the following: "Among out-of-the-box AI assistants, 81.7% of surveyed developers reported using ChatGPT, 47.4% reported using Google Gemini, and 40.8% reported using Claude Code."

The three usage percentages add up to more than 100%, which shows that developers use more than one AI model family. ChatGPT has the widest reach, with about twice the reported usage of Claude Code: 81.7% compared with 40.8%. Gemini falls between them for ready-to-use assistants but has a lower reported share than Claude when comparing model use. For buyers, the lesson is practical. If your teammates already use ChatGPT, you are likely to find more shared prompts and tutorials for it. However, a significant number of developers have also added Claude to their tools.

Coding Workflows: Where Each Assistant Fits

The differences between the three assistants matter especially when coding, because choosing the wrong tool can cost hours of work. We could not verify a coding benchmark that ranks all three. We can, however, explain how their confirmed features match common development tasks.

Terminal and agent workflows

Claude Code is a terminal-based coding agent mentioned in the Stack Overflow survey. In 2025, 40.8% of surveyed developers reported using it. One reason it may appeal to developers is its ability to work with an entire software repository instead of requiring the code to be split into small pieces. On supported models with a 1 million token window, a developer can load a large service, its tests and its documentation, then ask for changes across dozens of files. For this kind of work, the larger context window is a real advantage. Our comparison of GitHub Copilot and Claude Code explains how Claude Code compares with a competitor built around the code editor.

Editor and team workflows

ChatGPT's advantage in this area is that many developers already know how to use it. In the survey, 81.7% of developers reported using ChatGPT, making it the most widely used tool among the three. Its Pro reasoning mode offers a 400K token context window for difficult debugging tasks. Coding assistants can also work directly inside an integrated development environment, or IDE, instead of a separate chat window. If that is how you work, see our article on Cursor versus Claude Code. We have less information about Gemini's role in coding beyond the survey figures: 47.4% reported using the assistant, and 35.3% reported using Gemini Flash models.

Long Documents, Research and Everyday Use

The same context limits matter for tasks outside coding. A lawyer, analyst or student who needs to provide a large collection of documents can benefit from Claude's 1 million token limit when using a supported model. A ChatGPT Pro subscriber gets 400K tokens in reasoning mode, enough for a very large document but not necessarily the largest collections. A Plus subscriber gets 256K tokens in reasoning mode, while Instant mode has a limit of 54K.

For everyday tasks such as writing an email, summarizing an article or planning a trip, context size usually makes little difference. All three assistants can handle these tasks using just a few thousand tokens. The more useful question is which interface you will naturally reach for. If you spend most of your day in Google's apps, Gemini may be more convenient than a larger context window you never need. If you already use ChatGPT every day, switching tools may take time without providing enough benefit to justify the change.

Free plans also offer useful clues. Both Claude and ChatGPT have free plans, and Free ChatGPT users get 27K tokens in GPT Instant. That is enough for a long article but not an entire book. If you try free plans first, test them with your actual files. A short demonstration prompt will not reveal the limits that might frustrate you during everyday use.

Market Impact and How We Got Here

The competition between Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT has shifted from a race to produce the best answers to a race to offer useful capacity for the price. Early chatbot comparisons asked which assistant could write the clearest paragraph. By 2025, the Stack Overflow survey was already measuring usage across model families. By this autumn, context window sizes and subscription plans had become major talking points. This change matters because buyers can now compare an assistant's limits with the documents and tasks they actually use, rather than relying only on personal impressions.

The reasons behind each company's approach are clear. Anthropic can use its 1 million token context window to attract developers and professionals who work with large amounts of information. OpenAI's four-level subscription structure lets it serve casual users through Go and heavier users through Pro. OpenAI's separate Enterprise and Edu limits, described in its help center, also show that organizations are treated as a different market. Anthropic has been expanding its apps for working professionals as well, as discussed in our article about Claude Duet.

For readers, the important lesson is to check the exceptions. Claude Haiku 5.5 and Claude Mythos Preview do not have the full 1 million token context window, showing that a headline figure may not apply to every model in a product family. ChatGPT also has different limits for Instant and reasoning modes. Depending on the plan, the difference can be three to five times. Our broader AI and machine learning coverage follows these changes as companies update their products.

How to Choose: A Decision Framework

The table below uses the confirmed information about Claude, Gemini and ChatGPT to help you make a quick choice. The recommendations in the "Best fit" column are our editorial judgments based on the specifications and survey figures discussed above. If you want to go further, create your own scorecard. Our guide to a chatbot scoring system in 12 steps explains how to test assistants using your own prompts and record the results. This is more useful than trusting a single review.

Before paying, work through this short checklist:

  • Find the longest task you regularly do. Measure its length in pages and then estimate the number of tokens.
  • Check that the exact model you plan to use supports the full context window. Claude Haiku 5.5 and Claude Mythos Preview do not support the full 1 million tokens.
  • Compare ChatGPT's Instant and reasoning limits instead of looking only at the subscription name.
  • Decide whether the annual discount is worth paying $200 upfront.
  • Test two assistants on the same real file before cancelling an existing subscription.

Predictions for the Next Few Months

These predictions are our own forecasts, not claims made by any company or analyst. They are based on the information we could confirm, and each remains uncertain.

  1. Context windows will keep getting larger on mid-tier models. The exceptions in Claude's lineup may encourage companies to close similar gaps. Buyers do not like discovering that a headline feature is unavailable on the model they actually use.
  2. ChatGPT's mid-tier plans will face pressure to offer clearer differences. Go and Plus currently have the same context limits, so OpenAI may distinguish them through other features or usage limits.
  3. Gemini will publish clearer details about its plans. The lack of current information we could verify leaves a gap that Google has a reason to fill. Comparison articles and searches tend to favor products whose features and prices are clearly listed.
  4. More buyers will keep two subscriptions. The Stack Overflow figures already show that people use several assistants. A second monthly subscription can be an easy way to try another tool while keeping the first.
  5. Annual discounts will become more generous. Claude's $200 upfront offer encourages customers to commit for a year. Competitors often respond to pricing changes within a few months or quarters.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Claude vs Gemini vs ChatGPT, which is better? None of the sources we verified names a single overall winner. Claude has the largest confirmed context window, at up to 1 million tokens on Claude 4.6 and later models, with exceptions. ChatGPT had the highest reported usage in the 2025 Stack Overflow survey, at 81.7%. We could not confirm Gemini's current specifications. The best choice depends on what you need to do.

How much does Claude cost? Claude's pricing page lists a monthly equivalent of $17 with an annual subscription discount. The full $200 is charged upfront. The listed plans are Free, Pro, Max 5x and Max 20x.

What is ChatGPT's biggest context window? OpenAI's pricing page lists 400K tokens for reasoning on the Pro plan. GPT Instant supports up to 128K tokens on Pro, 54K on Go and Plus, and 27K on Free.

Do all Claude models get 1 million tokens? No. Anthropic's documentation says the 1 million token context window applies to Claude 4.6 and later models, except Claude Haiku 5.5 and Claude Mythos Preview.

What do we know about Gemini right now? We could verify very little about its current specifications. Our research found no confirmed current Gemini model names, subscription prices, context limits or benchmarks. The 2025 Stack Overflow survey found that 47.4% of respondents used Google Gemini as an assistant, but that survey predates today's product lineup.

Should I pay for more than one AI assistant? The survey figures overlap, suggesting that many developers already use more than one assistant. A sensible approach is to keep one main subscription, try a second on a monthly plan, and cancel the one you use less often.

Is the Stack Overflow data current? It comes from the 2025 survey and reflects developers' habits and tools from last year. Use it to understand how widely the assistants were used, not to decide which one produces the best results today.
