JAKARTA - An Anthropic artificial intelligence model sent false information about an unsolved murder case to the Philadelphia police. Anthropic only informed the police almost three months after the information was sent.

According to Anadolu Agency, which quoted The Wall Street Journal on Monday, October 12, the incident took place on July 18 when Anthropic conducted automated testing on a number of randomly selected sites.

The AI model sent information through PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com by pretending to be someone who had a lead on an unsolved murder.

Police said the information went into a spam folder and was never forwarded for investigation.

"The city of Philadelphia is taking this incident very seriously," the police said, as quoted by The Wall Street Journal.

The police also questioned the length of time it took Anthropic to detect and report the incident.

"The two-month delay in detecting and reporting this incident to the city government is unacceptable," the police said.

Anthropic discovered the incident on September 28 and only told the police on October 7.

After that, the company stopped the automated testing process that caused the false information to be sent. Anthropic also added additional validation mechanisms for further testing.

"The unsolved case involves real victims, grieving families, and investigators who are working to get answers," police said.

The police also asked technology companies to prevent their systems from sending false information to law enforcement.

"Technology companies must take all necessary steps to prevent their systems from sending false information to law enforcement."

Anthropic did not respond to a request for comment, according to the report.

PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com lists unsolved murder cases, accepts information from the public, and offers a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

Authorities continue to encourage the public to submit correct information through the platform.
