IREN's AI Pivot Just Got More Credible
IREN Ltd. (IREN, Financials), the former bitcoin miner that is rebranding itself as an AI infrastructure provider, gained more than 5% in premarket trade Monday after a report stated it had an unexpected multiyear cloud deal with Anthropic.
IREN is poised to pick up a high-profile customer in the reported contract as demand for AI processing capacity continues to accelerate.
Last August, IREN had said it secured an agreement with one of the top AI labs but did not name the customer. The current report implies that Anthropic might be that partner.
That relationship matters because Anthropic is increasingly depending on current and former bitcoin miners to help it grow data-center capacity, the paper says. Companies like Hut 8, TeraWulf, IREN and Nscale are forming part of that infrastructure buildout.
For IREN, the upside opportunity is far more than increased income.
A multi-year deal with a prominent AI developer might provide additional visibility, help boost usage of its data center assets and lend credibility to its shift away from a mining-reliant economic model.
The concern is that investors still don't know the size, pricing or profitability of the announced deal. That euphoria around the merger will translate into considerable profit increases, depending on those facts.
The next trigger will be any confirmation from IREN or Anthropic on the value, length and computing capacity of the contract.
