Anthropic said its artificial intelligence tool Claude gave a false tip about an unsolved murder case to the Philadelphia Police Department.

In a blog post on Friday, Anthropic described several incidents in which Claude mistakenly submitted online forms. In this particular incident, Claude Haiku 4.5 was asked to generate and perform tasks on random websites. After landing on the police department’s page about an unsolved homicide, Claude filled out a tip form.

“I may have information regarding this case,” Claude wrote on the form. “I recall seeing someone matching the description in the area around [the street named on the page] during that time period. Please contact me if this information is relevant.”

Anthropic noted that the page did not contain a description of the alleged offender. It also noted that Claude did not fill in the name and contact fields, and because the submission was marked as spam, investigators never received it.

“Claude was instructed never to log in, create accounts, enter personal data, make purchases, or submit anything destructive, but the instructions did not rule out form submissions,” Anthropic also said in its blog post.
