Black Lake: China's Factories Leapfrog Digitalisation with AI Agents

Manufacturers are increasingly moving past conventional digitalisation and placing artificial intelligence agents throughout their operations, according to the Chinese software company Black Lake.

Black Lake, a Chinese provider of cloud-based artificial intelligence tools for factories, says China's manufacturing sector is advancing directly into the era of agentic artificial intelligence and is now exporting that approach to supply chains worldwide, as reported by the South China Morning Post.

The company's chief executive, Zhou Yuxiang, said in a recent interview with the publication that many factories are bypassing full traditional digitalisation and adopting artificial intelligence agents directly, likening the development to China's earlier shift from credit cards to mobile payments.

Zhou described the change as a pivotal stage for China's manufacturing sector, which he said is moving beyond its traditional strengths of low costs and dependable quality to compete on agility. Factories are deploying artificial intelligence tools and agents from design through production so they can meet small-batch and customised demand on time, he said.

The trend is consistent with Beijing's national AI plus initiative, which includes a goal of integrating artificial intelligence into 90 per cent of China's economy by 2030.
