Anthropic updated its usage policy to protect Claude from bullies. Along with clarifications on child sexual abuse material and weapons development, the 2026 Usage Policy update prohibits users from "Engag[ing] in sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward our models"

The update published yesterday, and effective in November, along with sections titled "Do Not Undermine Democratic Processes" and "Do Not Generate Sexually Explicit Content" is a section called "Do Not Engage in Cruel, Abusive, or Psychologically Harmful Conduct." The last item now specifically prohibits subjecting Anthropic's models to this behavior.

Anthropic clarified that this rule is in place only for "extreme" cases, where users act "with no discernable purpose," and does not prohibit "user frustration, pushback, dark creative themes, or model testing and research."

While abusing a non-sentient entity like an LLM seems like sociopathic behavior, this prohibition feels like an attempt to anthropomorphize Claude and further convince the public that it has feelings that can be hurt.
