OpenAI is negotiating to hand over its shelved video-generation AI, Sora, to a startup, The Information reported on Oct. 12 local time.
The report said a startup developing AI video technology for filmmakers is in talks with OpenAI to use Sora. The startup plans to take over Sora, improve it and sell software or services based on it.
The startup in talks with OpenAI was founded months ago by Hollywood heavyweight Jeffrey Katzenberg, Bill Peebles, who led Sora research, and Sujay Jaswa, a former chief financial officer at Dropbox. Its name is not known.
It is unclear whether the startup would also receive Sora weights, the parameter values that determine how a model answers questions.
If a deal is reached, the startup would get deep access rights sufficient to significantly modify Sora, The Information reported, citing a source familiar with the talks. The Information said it would not be strange to also share the weights, since Peebles led Sora's development and already knows the model architecture and training method.
If the deal is completed, OpenAI would receive an equity stake in the startup. The size of the stake has not been confirmed.
OpenAI halted the Sora model and an audio-based app earlier this year as part of a business adjustment.
