RAPID CITY, S.D. (KOTA) - Independent U.S. Senate candidate Brian Bengs is calling attention to a new report that says OpenAI fired three safety researchers in a dispute over risks.

Bengs’ opponent this November is Senator Mike Rounds, who is currently co-chair of the Senate Artificial Intelligence Caucus.

Some have criticized Washington for not conducting enough oversight of AI companies such as OpenAI, which developed ChatGPT.

The now-fired researchers say the company needs to allow third-party safety monitors, as rapidly advancing AI could pose unknown risks.

The researchers also fear their dismissals will keep others from expressing concerns.

Senator Rounds has repeatedly said AI is vital for national defense and restrictive regulations could give foreign adversaries China and Russia an advantage.
