An artificial intelligence (AI) self-operated shipyard worth 400 billion won will be built in Yeongam-gun, Gwangju, Jeollanam-do. HD Hyundai Samho and Daeah Industrial plan to invest by 2031 to create a leading factory that applies AI technology to the ship manufacturing process.

On the 12th, Jeollanam-do Gwangju Integrated Special City signed an investment and business agreement with Yeongam-gun, HD Hyundai Samho, Daea Industrial, and local shipbuilding and equipment organizations. Core technologies secured by leading factories will be transferred to local shipbuilding companies, and the Daebul Management Council and the Jeonnam Shipbuilding & Materials Cooperative will promote technology introduction and new investment by member companies.

The investment is also linked to the government's artificial intelligence transformation (AX) strategy in the shipbuilding industry. The government will jointly push for three major projects worth more than 1.4 trillion won by 2030 between the public and private sectors, and proposed the Yeongam AI Shipyard Lighthouse Plant as its first project. The lighthouse factory is a factory that first applies new manufacturing technology and becomes an introduction model for other companies.

The integrated special city and Yeongam-gun plan to support local companies' technology application in connection with two projects, the 'Great Busan AX Demonstration Platform' in 2025 and the 'Joseon Industry AX Demonstration Base' in 2026. In line with the government's "K-Chosun Future Vision," it will create a foundation for development and demonstration of ships powered by eco-friendly fuels, cargo windows loaded with liquefied natural gas (LNG), and autonomous ships.

Mayor Min Hyung-bae said, "The large-scale investment of HD Hyundai Samho will serve as an opportunity to spread the AX of the shipbuilding industry to the entire local industrial ecosystem," adding, "We will make the southwestern region a future industrial base where shipbuilding and equipment companies grow together by adding strong competitiveness of AI to the shipbuilding base owned by the integrated special city."
