Secret Recording Device Found in OpenAI Offices: AI Identifies Employee, FBI Makes Arrest
The American artificial intelligence company, OpenAI, has announced the discovery of a sophisticated recording device hidden in one of its offices.
According to the company, the device was placed by an employee, who was identified with the help of AI models developed by OpenAI itself.
The case has been referred to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), and U.S. authorities have already made an arrest.
In a statement released on October 13, OpenAI explained how the device was discovered and how the person suspected of placing it was identified.
“We discovered a sophisticated recording device that was hidden inside one of our offices. We used our models to understand the device and its origin, identifying that a specific employee had placed it there a few days earlier,” the OpenAI statement reads.
The company has disclosed that, after identifying the employee, the matter was handed over to U.S. federal authorities.
“We referred the case to the FBI and are grateful to the agents and prosecutors who acted swiftly to make an arrest. The FBI’s investigation is ongoing, and we will continue to support their work,” OpenAI declared.
However, the company has not disclosed the identity of the employee or the possible motives for placing the recording device.
An important part of the announcement relates to the security of the technology and data owned by the company.
OpenAI has emphasized that, so far, there is no indication that the identified person gained inappropriate access to the company’s systems and sensitive data.
“Currently, we have no indication that this individual had inappropriate access or extracted the model weights, source code, or client data from the company. The employee has been terminated,” the statement says.
Model weights are numerical parameters that determine how AI models function. OpenAI has included them among the categories of information for which it says there is no indication of inappropriate access or extraction.
The company has also presented the incident as an example of using artificial intelligence to identify and address security threats.
“We take the protection of our technology, data, and people seriously, as a matter of national importance,” OpenAI stated.
According to the company, the security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threats, including insider risks, cybercriminals, and state actors.
“Our security program is designed to protect against a wide range of threat actors, from insider risks to cybercriminals and states, and this case is an example of how artificial intelligence can help address these sophisticated security threats,” the statement concludes.
