AI weapons detection systems now at Hillsboro schools

HILLSBORO, Mo. (First Alert 4) - New artificial intelligence weapons detection systems are now operational at Hillsboro High School and Hillsboro Junior High School, with the technology in full use for the first time as students arrive Tuesday morning.
The Hillsboro School District installed Evolv Express weapons detection systems at the main entrances of both schools. The technology is designed to help identify potential weapons as students and staff enter the buildings without significantly slowing the start of the school day.
The systems use sensors and artificial intelligence to analyze objects as people walk through. If a potential threat is detected, the system alerts trained security personnel, who can investigate further.
Unlike traditional metal detectors, the technology is designed to distinguish potential threats from many everyday items, which the district says can help reduce unnecessary alarms.
The district says it is the first in Jefferson County to implement this particular technology. However, officials emphasize that the systems are only one part of a broader school safety plan.
The technology is intended to work alongside school safety officers, controlled building access, emergency preparedness measures and coordination with local law enforcement.
The superintendent said no single piece of technology can eliminate every threat, but the district has a responsibility to take reasonable steps to protect students and staff.
The school board approved the purchase in July. With installation complete, district officials describe the systems as an additional layer of protection for students and staff.
