The FBI has arrested a Saudi national, Abdulrahman Alfozan, who worked on OpenAI’s product team, for allegedly placing a hidden listening device in the company’s executive conference room. According to TechCrunch, Alfozan was arrested on October 9, about a week after OpenAI discovered the listening device. He has been charged with using an electronic device to intercept oral communications without permission.

OpenAI stated that it used its artificial intelligence models to identify and understand the sophisticated device, which featured advanced coding capabilities, audio monitoring, and a data transfer mechanism designed to evade detection. However, it remains unclear what the device was intended for, but FBI Director Kash Patel said the scheme aimed to capture sensitive communications about the company’s superintelligence technology.

Prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of California have confirmed that Alfozan was caught looking behind the television where the listening device was placed, and where OpenAI had set up a camera that allegedly captured him. If convicted, Alfozan faces up to five years in prison.

OpenAI spokesperson Nate Evans confirmed that Alfozan began working in July 2025. Meanwhile, the FBI has emphasized the importance of protecting American superintelligence innovation, calling it one of the highest counterintelligence priorities.
