Investing.com -- OpenAI's (NASDAQ:OAI) head of computing capacity, Sachin Katti, is set to step down next month after roughly a year in the role, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. The departure marks the latest high-profile management shift within a critical unit tasked with overseeing hundreds of billions of dollars in infrastructure investments over the coming years.

Katti joined the artificial intelligence startup in late 2025 to streamline its ambitious Stargate data center initiative, which experienced initial delays following stalled negotiations with SoftBank and Oracle. To bolster capacity, Katti successfully forged separate agreements with both firms while securing supplemental computing arrangements with major providers, including Amazon Web Services.

Beyond vendor partnerships, Katti spearheaded efforts to revive OpenAI's strategy around directly leasing data center facility footprints rather than relying solely on rented third-party capacity. That initiative culminated in August with a 10-gigawatt data center lease alongside SB Energy, backed by a financial guarantee from Nvidia.

OpenAI plans to formally announce the departure internally on Wednesday, though Katti is expected to remain involved with the company as an adviser, people familiar with the matter told The Wall Street Journal. The transition comes as global technology leaders aggressively deploy capital toward vast infrastructure projects essential for supporting next-generation model training and deployment.

Uday Ruddarraju, a former xAI executive who was elevated to chief technology officer of computing capacity at OpenAI earlier this summer, will assume leadership over the group's computing strategy. Reporting directly to OpenAI President Greg Brockman, Ruddarraju takes charge of securing compute power that remains fundamental to maintaining the company's competitive trajectory.
