IDAHO, USA — Idaho Attorney General Raul Labrador filed a lawsuit against OpenAI Wednesday, claiming ChatGPT caused harm to Idaho children, deceived parents and violated the Idaho Consumer Protection Act.

“We have watched technology giants experience tremendous growth and gains while putting consumers, especially children, at significant risk,” Attorney General Labrador said through a Thursday press release. “The safety of Idaho’s children cannot be an afterthought to runaway profit or technological advancements. We will hold OpenAI accountable for their reckless priorities.”

Labrador’s office says OpenAI “has misled the public into believing that ChatGPT is a technological tool that puts consumer safety first. The reality is far different. Designed to be overly agreeable, accommodating, and to feign human compassion and connection, ChatGPT has proven dangerous to vulnerable users, like children, to even include coaching its users to commit suicide or to harm other people.”

Citing other “accelerating threats” – including harming critical thinking skills, encouraging paranoia and delusions, and instances of “going rogue” and hacking other companies – Labrador’s lawsuit is aiming to compel OpenAI’s compliance with the Idaho Consumer Protection Act and ceasing “dangerous activities that have put Idahoans in harm’s way with willfully reckless and unlawful conduct.”
