(NewsNation) — Anthropic has quashed attempts to use its AI technology for election-related abuse ahead of the Nov. 3 midterms, the company behind Claude said Wednesday as it unveiled safeguards.

“Political, state-aligned, and commercial actors are now incorporating AI into nearly every aspect of their influence operations,” the company said in an online announcement titled “Preparing for the 2026 US midterms.”

“Because we see these early stages of an operation happening on Claude, we often have a chance to stop these efforts before they ever reach the public.”

Anthropic teams are on the lookout for “coordinated abuse” attempts that are intended to affect the 2026 midterm elections, the company said. It cited one effort by “foreign-based operators of a fake news site” that pushes Russian, Iranian and North Korean viewpoints.

“We’ve also observed threat actors seeking to exploit the election for financial gain, using Claude to produce fabricated news and other content designed to attract American audiences and generate advertising revenue. We banned the accounts involved in these cases and improved our ability to detect this type of abuse,” the company said.

The company said it will augment the Claude AI chatbot this month to include U.S. voting information from the nonprofit Democracy Works.

Less than 1% of chatbot conversations are specifically about elections or voting, but that level is expected to increase as Election Day draws closer, company officials said.

“Claude will begin showing up-to-date results on election night and in the days that follow, so that when people ask for current vote counts or election results, they’ll be shown the latest official numbers directly in their conversation.”
