Campers rescued from Oak Creek Canyon after storms flood crossing

Coconino County officials say everyone is safe as crews deliver food and water to campers isolated by high water since Sunday.

OAK CREEK CANYON, Ariz. — More than 60 campers and campground hosts were stranded at a northern Arizona campground since Sunday after recent storms flooded a low-water crossing, according to the Coconino County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said 65 campers and hosts at Cave Springs Campground were unable to leave because the crossing is underwater. Authorities have been in contact with those stranded and reported that everyone is safe.

Crews delivered food and water to campers Tuesday morning in case the flooding lingers longer than expected.

The campground became isolated after storms raised water levels over the crossing, preventing vehicles from safely entering and exiting the area.

“We’ve just been keeping an eye on the water and praying that the water level goes down so we can all get out of here. We’re very thankful that they dropped off for the food, cause, I know we ate our last meal last night, our last dinner, and you know my husband always says a bad day camping is still better than a good day at work," one of the stranded campers, Tanja Hooper, told 12News.

The campers were able to leave on Tuesday evening, with many telling 12News they are excited to be able to go home safely. Authorities confirmed on Oct. 14 that the water receded and most campers evacuated.
