West Virginia Attorney General J.B. McCuskey announces lawsuit against OpenAI, citing safety concerns for W.Va. children

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WOWK) — West Virginia Attorney General J.B. McCuskey is taking legal action against an app that he says endangers children in W.Va.
Attorney General McCuskey announced that a multi-state lawsuit has been filed against OpenAI, saying the company endangers children and deceives parents, particularly when it comes to the app ChatGPT.
McCuskey was joined by multiple attorneys general from across the United States to announce the lawsuit.
He pointed to research that indicates that ChatGPT is harming critical thinking skills, offering dangerous medical advice and promoting unhealthy behaviors and relationships.
“We must do all we can to protect kids. We have seen time and time again that OpenAI is a danger and the company is doing little to stop it,” Attorney General McCuskey said. “There is no age verification and there are no guardrails for conversations about suicides, school shootings or self-harm. We do not allow bad businesses to operate in West Virginia and break our laws and will not allow OpenAI to continue hurting our kids.”
Since 2022, ChatGPT has become the most popular AI chatbot in the entire world, accounting for almost half of the chatbot marketplace in the U.S.
